Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Cheshvan*, in which you describe the state of relations within your household and what results from this for your practice of Torah* and mitzvos*, which is not what it should be. As you know, the ways of our Torah*, Torah of life, are pleasant and peaceful. Nevertheless, we have been told: "You shall reprove." Thus, the pleasant and peaceful ways are the form that all actions, all proposals, all ways of convincing others must take. The content, however, can only conform to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah of life. And if this is so for one's fellow in general, how much more is it the case for one's own wife, for there is indeed an injunction to follow pleasant and peaceful ways. But this in no way gives one the right to "travel on Shabbos*," Heaven forbid — to use the expression you employ in your letter — for all the precepts of our holy Torah* remain in force. How much more so for Shabbos*, which is considered equivalent to all the mitzvos*.

You also speak in your letter of "abandoning your wife," Heaven forbid. This is, of course, out of the question. Two injunctions — "You shall love your fellow as yourself" and "You shall reprove your fellow and you shall not bear sin because of him" — were both given by the Creator of the world, Who directs it, Who creates together the hearts of all the children of Israel, and Who knows what is the best way to influence them. Nevertheless, a person is not objective regarding what concerns him personally and may orient his decision according to the way he observes the situation. You will therefore present your situation to friends who fear Hashem and they will guide you.

You ask me, at the end of your letter, about the meaning of your dreams. Our Sages* say that their meaning depends on their oral interpretation. You will therefore give them a positive meaning, of a true good — that of Torah* and mitzvos* — and you will find in them the encouragement, an injunction to put our Torah* and its mitzvos* into practice, from one level to the next. For nothing can withstand determination.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe shlita*,
