To the great Rav*, who fears Hashem, Rav Alter (note 1: Rav A. Hilevitch, of Johannesburg, South Africa; see on his subject letter no. 1952),
Greetings and blessings,
A) I am responding to your letter of 2 Marcheshvan*, formulating remarks on what is printed in the Kovetz* Lubavitch (note 2: Letter no. 165 states: "Chapter 24 of the Tanya* explains: 'A situation of danger overrides all other transgressions, including when one must allow oneself to be killed rather than transgress.' What is the meaning of the specification: 'when one must allow oneself to be killed rather than transgress'?"), fifth year, volume 1, in the section "Responses and Comments," regarding the explanation developed in chapter 24 of the Tanya*, concerning a situation of danger.
You do not clearly specify in your letter the interpretation you advance, according to which the situation of danger is one where one is exposed to suffering. Are you alluding to suffering that causes death or not? In any case, a situation of danger is defined in relation to the possibility of preserving life or losing it, and several Talmudic passages enable us to establish that this is indeed so, the primary reference being tractate Yoma* 85a, which can be interpreted in two opposite ways. On the one hand, a risk of death overrides Shabbos*, even in the absence of suffering. This text, on the other hand, does not allude to suffering that does not result in death, and it concludes: "Violate one Shabbos* on his behalf so that he may observe many" (note 3: precisely because he will have preserved his life). The same applies in the other Talmudic passages.
B) In the same volume, in the section "Fine Explanations" (note 4: see Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, page 531; see also letter no. 3705), I cited the Rambam*, Laws of Character Traits, beginning of chapter 4. It seems that one should read in this text: "the ways of the service of Hashem" instead of "the ways of Hashem." You interpret my remark as an explanation of the Rambam's* words, which would in this case refer to the injunction: "You shall take great care of your souls."
It is clear that this is not what I meant. I was simply noting that this statement follows what the Rambam* says at the end of chapter 3 and, indeed, this chapter begins with "since" in order to develop the end of the preceding chapter: "One cannot serve Hashem while being ill. Sleep can therefore be an act of this service of Hashem, blessed be He" — which relates to the opposite of illness, to physical health, which is indeed the means of serving Hashem. The Rambam's* statement must be distinguished from that of our Sages*: "Cleave to His ways. Be merciful." Indeed, this can be said of mercy, but not of physical health, obviously.
With my blessing,
M. Schneerson
You ask me about the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 271, paragraph 23, which says "the first." The Kuntres HaShulchan* of Rav Naeh* specifies that one should read "the last." One can, moreover, establish this by noting that the Alter Rebbe* reproduces here the terms of the Rama*, at the same reference.
