Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the eve of Shabbos*. Referring to what the Alter Rebbe* says in Iggeres HaTeshuvah* regarding the substitution of tzedakah* for fasting, you ask me whether a fast of speech can have the same effect (note 1: as tzedakah*). One can deduce from the development of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* that in this case, it cannot. You will consult chapter 3 of this text, which reports what the Decisors recommend giving in order to redeem a day of fasting. In contrast, a fast of speech has a different purpose and applies only in very specific cases. It does not, however, replace an actual fast. You will also consult on this subject the Sefer HaToldos* of the Rebbe Maharash* (note 2: of which the Rebbe is the author), at the end of page 72.
You bring up the practice of distributing coins (note 3: adopted by the masters of the Chassidic* schools of Poland, as a form of protection; see the Igros Kodesh* of the Frierdiker Rebbe*, volume 7, letter no. 1873). One may wonder what relevance this has for you. Our Sages* say that the Holy One, blessed be He, created nothing useless in His world. This means that the thoughts, words, and actions of man must also not be useless. They must have a purpose, a goal, which is, in this instance, expressed by the Mishnah* in the following terms: "I was created to serve my Creator."
One can also deduce this from what the Rambam*, the Tur*, and Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 231, state — that one must put into practice the principle: "In all your ways, know Him." The answer to the question you pose is therefore as follows: one may indeed wonder what purpose this serves (note 4: the inquiry into this distribution of coins). Nevertheless, to set aside everything that might be said, the Gemara* formulates precisely such an inquiry, in tractate Bava Basra* 15b.
I sincerely hope that, from time to time, you intensify your study not only of the revealed part of the Torah*, but also of Chassidus*. Indeed, the Halachah* establishes, in a definitive manner, that one ascends in matters of holiness.
