Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*. At an auspicious moment, I will mention the name of your wife at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. As you write, you had the merit of hearing from his mouth the well-known Chassidic* discourse entitled: "Therefore those who speak in parables say: Come, let us make an accounting." Of course, the more you strengthen your commitment to Torah* and mitzvos*, in accordance with what our Sages* explain regarding this verse — "Come, let us make an accounting of the world" — the more you will multiply the blessings of Hashem in all your needs, material and spiritual.

You tell me in your letter that you are not fit to write to me, because you do not have the strength to prevail in the war against your evil inclination (yetzer hara*). You surely preserve the memory of what the holy Tanya* says, or you will study it now. It affirms that those who have difficulty struggling against the evil inclination within their four cubits nonetheless receive, fully and entirely, the means not only to wage this battle, but also to carry the victory. You will consult the references indicated in the index found at the end of the Tanya*.

How much more so for those who had the merit of seeing the face of the tzaddik*, of listening to his words. Indeed, the words of the righteous live, exist, and they produce their effect, a fortiori in the spiritual domain. Everyone, including non-Jews, acknowledges that matter cannot be reduced to nothingness — it is only possible to transform it. This is all the more true in the spiritual domain, especially concerning Torah* and mitzvos*.

According to a proverb of our holy masters, an action is preferable to a thousand laments. Instead of lamenting over one's own account — which can sometimes be useful — it is surely preferable to begin to act, to multiply one's commitment to Torah* and mitzvos* beyond what you have practiced until now. It is certain that one who acts in this manner multiplies the blessings of Hashem in all his needs.

May Hashem, in His great goodness, reveal increased blessing and success, including for the future. You will give me good tidings of all this. With my blessing,

For the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,
