To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav N. N. (note 1: Rav Nissan Nemanow, director of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch of Brunoy, in the Paris region; see on his subject letters no. 4892 and 5977),

Greetings and blessings,

Some time ago, I received with pleasure your letter informing me of the arrival of a new class of young men — students from Morocco. May Hashem grant that they multiply, qualitatively and quantitatively — that is, in their number and in the level of their knowledge, in their good conduct.

Benches are thus added in the house of study, and ultimately it is therefore a necessity that the situation of the school of Sofrim* (note 2: see on this subject letter no. 4961; the young men from Morocco were, in part, to become students of this school) be strengthened and stabilized, at least in relation to the expectations, as I discussed here with the Chassid*, Rav T. L. HaLevi (note 3: Rav Tzvi Leib Lewin, charged with directing this school). They (note 4: the students of the Sofrut* school) must therefore have fixed studies of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, pray with fervor, and then, for several hours each day, while the other students continue the studies in the Yeshivah* program, they will devote themselves to this sacred mission — the writing of the Sefer Torah*, Tefillin*, and Mezuzos*. On the other hand, before these hours and after them, they will have the same responsibilities as all the other students of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. None of them should therefore be discouraged, Heaven forbid. Furthermore, for everything concerning their study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, they must receive instructions from their teacher and the rector of Tomchei Temimim*, except for the few hours devoted to Sofrut* and the laws pertaining to it, for which these instructions will be given to them by the Chassid*, Rav T. L. HaLevi.

This study will conform to the teaching of the Mishnah*. It must therefore bring together friends. Now, two young men, from what I have been told, have completed their training and have already begun writing parchments and fabricating housings. It is therefore necessary that at least five students study Sofrut*. It is even preferable that they be six or more, without however eliminating a class of Tomchei Temimim*, insofar as possible.

In light of all this, I am certain that the administration of Tomchei Temimim* will choose the students who are suitable, verifying their aptitudes by means of an examination. So that there be no subsequent disappointment and wasted time, it is of course preferable that the examination and selection take place, insofar as possible, as early as possible in the school year. I await good tidings of this as soon as possible.

Please emphasize to the students who are selected that their lot is enviable, since they will devote themselves to this sacred mission, even though it represents a considerable responsibility, as established by various texts. They will write a Sefer Torah*, Tefillin*, Mezuzos*, and others affirm that they are fit to do so — which means that from above, they are granted the necessary strength to receive such a responsibility and to fulfill it.

At all times, and how much more so at the present hour, there are no words to define the merit that constitutes the provision, to the greatest number, of proper Tefillin* and proper Mezuzos*. Moreover, the entirety of the Torah* was compared to Tefillin*, and Chassidus* adds (note 5: Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*, page 275a) that a Mezuzah* is compared to all the mitzvos*. One can also deduce this from the revealed part of the Torah*. Indeed, the purpose of Tefillin*, as defined by the Halachah*, is the subjugation to Hashem of the heart and the brain — that is, of the dominant aspect of the personality. For the Mezuzah* is the seal of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, that is borne by all objects and everything found in His house.

I await good tidings of all this, and given the urgency, this letter is sent to you by express mail. With my blessing for success in your sacred mission,

M. Schneerson,
