Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the day on which the word "good" was said twice (note 1: during creation, Tuesday). You tell me that a match is being proposed to you and you ask me whether it is necessary for you to make the young woman's acquaintance personally (note 2: by personally gathering the necessary information about this young woman), beyond what you know of her until now, as some of your friends suggest, despite what is explained in the works dealing with ethics and modesty.

This young woman resides in a city where there are several Torah* scholars, and you no doubt have friends there as well. There are therefore surely several means, in accordance with Torah* and ethics, of gathering all the necessary information about her. The assurance has been given to us that when one puts into practice the terms of the verse you yourself mention in your letter — "You shall be holy" — regarding which our Sages* say: "Sanctify yourself in that which is permitted to you," then He Who says of Himself, "for I am holy," multiplies His blessing and sends from above a considerable sanctification, according to tractate Yoma* 39a. One thus knows success in all domains and, in particular, in this one which is essential.

It follows from all that has been said that if some details concerning this young woman are not clear to you, they should be clarified — for example, through friends. And that will be amply sufficient.

With my blessing to intensify your commitment to Torah* and mitzvos*, in accordance with the injunction that "one ascends in matters of holiness," and to convey good tidings of all that has been said,

במענה על מכתבו מיום שהוכפל בו כי טוב, בו כותב אודות השידוך שמתעסק בו, ושואל אם מוכרח הדבר שבדוקא הוא בעצמו יכיר המדוברת, נוסף על מה שמכיר אותה עד עתה, וכמו שיש מחבריו אומרים לו בזה, למרות הכתוב בספרים המדברים בעניני מוסר וצניעות.

הנה כיון שהמדוברת דרה בעיר שישנם כמה ת"ח, ובטח גם ידידים, בודאי כמה אופנים על פי התורה והמוסר ישנם להוודע ע"ד המדוברת כל אותם הענינים שצריכים להוודע, ומובטחים אנו שע"י קיום הכתוב שמזכיר ג"כ במכתבו, קדושים תהיו, ובלשון חז"ל ורז"ל, קדש עצמך במותר לך, הנה אותו שאומר על עצמו כי קדוש אני מרבה ברכתו ומקדשו הרבה מלמעלה (עיין יומא ל"ט רע"א), ובהצלחה בכל עניניו ובענין עיקרי כהנ"ל ביחוד.

המורם מהאמור, שאם ישנם איזה פרטים אודות המדוברת שאינם ברורים אצלו, יש לבררם ע"י ידידים וכיו"ב, וזה די ומספיק.
