Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received the report of your meeting of the 27th of Elul, that of your activities during Elul and Tishrei*. I await the continuation of good news regarding your positive activities. I am surprised to note that you wondered where to obtain the four species necessary for this campaign (note: of disseminating the mitzvos* of Sukkos*). Indeed, all those who participated possess them themselves, or their father or their relatives do. And you know the custom of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, who would allow several people to recite the blessing with his esrog*. It is also said that a Tzaddik*, presumably from Poland, did this systematically. He was asked whether this intensive use did not compromise the beauty of the fruit. He replied that there was no greater beauty than the fulfillment, by many Jews, of so elevated a mitzvah*. And you will see tractate Sukkah* 38b, according to which, in such a case, it is forbidden to borrow it only if it belongs to pure terumah*, in which case one degrades it.

You know the principle of our Sages* according to which "a person prefers that his property be used to fulfill the mitzvos*" — which means that there is no minority adopting the opposite behavior, for in financial questions, one does not refer to the majority, as the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* states, chapter 4, beginning of paragraph 9. If this is so for all the mitzvos*, how much more so for the one that symbolizes the unity of Israel. For this is indeed what the four species allude to, as various texts and Chassidic* discourses explain at length. This is self-evident.

As is my custom in other areas, I will emphasize to the Chassidim*, without making a vow, the necessity of participating in this campaign. You will surely tell me what resulted from it. I will also tell them that they must participate in a specific collection, which should cover a third of the required budget, according to a fair estimate.

If you have noted the discourses from the gathering of the 15th of Elul (note: see, on this subject, Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5739), or at least their content, and if furthermore there are photographs of this gathering, one should consider publishing a pamphlet gathering all of this, adding some words of encouragement to the practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, to the spreading of the wellsprings (note: of Chassidus*). It would be good for everything to be ready and published before the upcoming festival of 19 Kislev*. Much time is needed to proofread these texts, and you will therefore attend to this as soon as possible. You will not fix the size of this booklet at the outset. Everything depends, indeed, on the material you find, in accordance with the objective adopted and, concretely, the future of the Chabad* institutions in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt.

You do not speak of a Chassidic* gathering having taken place in Kfar Chabad*, except for the one at the conclusion of Simchas Torah*. No doubt the Kfar Chabad* branch will complete all of this. Certainly, it is important to spread the wellsprings outward. Nevertheless, of this too it is said: "Do not hide yourself from your own flesh." Moreover, the emotions are themselves described as external (note: relative to the intellectual faculties). You will also consult the Reshimos* of the Tzemach Tzedek* on Eichah*, page 21.

With my blessing for success and awaiting good news of all this,

מאשר הנני קבלת הפ"כ מאסיפת כ"ז אלול והדו"ח מפעולות חדש אלול ותשרי, ואחכה להמשך הבשו"ט מפעולותיהם הטובות, ולפלא מה שכותבים שדנו איפוא להשיג הד' מינים הנצרכים למבצע זה, שהרי בטח כל אלו שהתעסקו בזה, יש להם הד' מינים או לאביהם וקרוביהם, וכבר ידועה הנהגת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שנתן לכו"כ לברך בהאתרוג שלו, ומסופר על אחד הרה"צ (כמדומה מפולין) שהתנהג כן בקביעות, וכששאלוהו, והרי ע"י משמוש נוגעים בהענין דהדר, ענה שאין לך הדר מזה שכו"כ מבנ"י יקיימו בו מצות נעלית זו (ולהעיר מסוכה (לה, ב) דרק של תרומה טהורה לא יטול מפני שמפסידה. ודו"ק). וכבר ידוע כלל חז"ל ניחא לי' לאינש דליתעבד מצוה בממונו (שאפילו מיעוט אינו באופן דלא כן שהרי בממון אין הולכין אחר הרוב. וראה שו"ע אדה"ז סי' ד' רס"ט). ואם בכל המצות כן עאכו"כ בזו המצוה שענינה אחדות כל ישראל שזהו רמז הד' מינים, וכמבואר בכ"מ ובדרושי דא"ח בארוכה, וק"ל.

מובן אשר כמנהגי בשאר הענינים, בל"נ אעורר את אנ"ש להשתתף במבצע זה, ובטח יודיעוני מה שהוציאו, ואעורר את אנ"ש בזה להשתתף ממגבית המיוחדת בערך בשליש ההוצאות כפי שהם באמת.

באם נרשמו (עכ"פ תוכן) הנאומים דכנוס ט"ו אלול, ובטח ישנם גם תמונות מהכנוס, כדאי הי' להתענין אודות אפשריות להו"ל חוברת כוללת הנ"ל בצירוף איזה דברי התעוררות לתורה ומצותי' ולענין הפצת המעינות, ומהנכון שיהי' הכל מוכן, וגם יו"ל עוד קודם חגיגת י"ט כסלו הבע"ל, וכיון שנצרך כמה זמן להגהה וכו' כדאי להתענין בזה בהקדם, ואין להגביל מראש גודל החוברת, שזה תלוי בדי חומר שיביא לתכלית רצוי' גם בנוגע לפועל בעתיד ולמוסדות חב"ד אשר באה"ק ת"ו.

אינם מזכירים כלל ע"ד התועדות בכפר חב"ד עצמו, לבד התועדות דמוצאי שמח"ת, ובודאי ימלאו עד"ז הסניף דכפר חב"ד וכו' שאף שגדול ענין הפצת המעינות חוצה, אבל גם על זה נאמר ומבשרך לא תתעלם, נוסף על הענין דאפילו ז"א נק' חוצה.
