1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Marcheshvan* 5718

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter from this Monday, in which you speak to me of the elevations and the falls that you have traversed over the course of the past year, as well as the effect all this has had on you. For various reasons, you have spoken of it to no one.

I am surprised by all of this, for you have surely studied the holy Tanya* many times. Now, this work establishes clearly to what extent one must totally exclude discouragement. You will consult its explanations with precision. Consequently, I will not elaborate at length, since all of this is quite evident. You will also find, in the Tanya*, the means to remedy this situation. You will see there that this rectification must be progressive, that it cannot be a leap forward.

I am equally astonished by the second point (note: the fact of having spoken of it to no one). Indeed, in a well-known teaching (note: see, on this subject, Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5581), the Mitteler Rebbe* made it known to us that when two Jews exchange on an idea of the Torah* and the mitzvos* — whether it pertains to the injunction "Do good" or to "Turn away from evil" — they unite two divine souls against a single animal soul. You understand well what follows from this. You have the merit of having become a student of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. Now, our holy masters gave of themselves for the founding of this institution, for its direction and its spirit. And the words of the Tzaddikim* are immutable. You therefore receive the most considerable help from Hashem.

But for this, the student must do everything in his power, in a positive manner, and set aside all negative behaviors — which includes, of course, discouragement and sadness. In this way, success will far exceed what you anticipate. The merit of your actions, whose purpose is the drawing near of Jewish hearts to our Father Who is in Heaven, will multiply this success, "measure for measure" (note: in proportion to the effort invested), including in what concerns you personally.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,
