To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Naftali Hertz (note: Rav N. H. Shapiro, of Antwerp),

Greetings and blessings,

I read with pleasure, in your letter, that you are a descendant, in direct line — as you yourself specify — of the Tzaddik*, the great Rav* and Chassid*, Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz*. I therefore have good hope that you know the merit and the responsibility of an heir. Moreover, an inheritance in direct line has no interruption, and if, in the material domain, a son inherits all the possessions of his father, how much more so is this the case in the moral dimension. In the latter case, however, it is a matter of a candle lighting another (note: without anything being diminished from its flame, whereas in the material domain, there is indeed a transfer of possessions from father to son). You will also consult tractate Eduyos*, at the end of chapter 2, according to which "the father confers merit upon the son." The commentators say that this is so by nature. How much more so is this the case according to the path of the Torah* and the mitzvos*.

Moreover, in consequence of all this, you surely endeavor to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus* in every place you can reach. For nothing can withstand the will, particularly in our era, when one can observe, in all circles, to what extent the heart of Israel is awakened. This is self-evident. I would be happy to have good news of the activities you are undertaking in this direction. Indeed, the merit of your ancestors comes to your aid.

On this occasion, I emphasize to you the importance of the three daily studies — in the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* — which are well known. As we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, these concern everyone and they have a propitious effect in various domains.

...נעם לי לקרות בסיום מכתבו אשר מיו"ח של הרה"צ הרה"ח הרה"ג ר' פנחס מקאריץ הם, וכפי שכותב בן אחר בן, וזה נותן לי התקוה אשר מכיר הוא בהזכות והאחריות של יורש, והרי בן אחר בן זהו אופן ירושה דאין לה הפסק, ואם בהנוגע לענינים גשמים הבן יורש את אביו את כל נכסיו, עאכו"כ בהנוגע לענינים רוחנים (אלא שבהם - כמדליק מנר לנר) ויעוין ג"כ עדיות סוף פרק ב' האב זוכה לבן כו' ומפרשים שם שאפילו ע"פ טבע כן הוא, עאכו"כ בעניני תורה ומצותי'. ובפרט שכפועל יוצא מהנ"ל בטח משתדל גם כן בהפצת מעינות החסידות בכל מקום שידו מגעת, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון ובפרט בתקופתנו שנראית התעוררות לב ישראל בכל החוגים וק"ל, וינעם לי להתבשר טוב מפעולותיו בהאמור והרי זכות אבותיו מסייעתו.

בהזדמנות זו אעוררו על שלשת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, אשר כפי ששמענו כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע שוים הם לכל נפש וסגולה לכו"כ ענינים.
