Igrot Kodesh · Letter 58 — Torah Pedagogy: Interpreting Yishak (Bereishit 41:40)
Volume 1 · Letter 58
By the grace of Hashem,
Tuesday 2 Adar II 5703
Brooklyn,
To one who devotes himself to a divine task, the Rav Y. [1],
I greet you and bless you,
In your letter from last week, you tell me that in teaching your students the verse (Bereishis* 41:40) "All my people shall be sustained (Yishak) by your word" [2], you connect the word Yishak to Neshikah*, kiss, relying on certain references allowing this analogy, because you do not wish to encumber the mind of a beginning student with a new meaning of a term he has already encountered. But, you tell me, some contest this manner of acting, Rashi* himself translating Yishak as "shall be sustained." You do not write to me what is the object of this contestation, but it is undoubtedly based on the fact that Rashi gives another interpretation.
In my opinion, this is not a sufficient reason, for it concerns here only understanding the simple meaning of the verse and not establishing the Halachah*. Rashi, in his commentary, develops his own conception, himself testifying that several interpretations can be given of a single verse. His grandson, the Rashbam*, reported that according to his own words, he would have developed other explanations had he had the time. All this is self-evident and answers the question of whether it is possible to choose the interpretation of another commentator when it contradicts that of Rashi.
Nevertheless, it is necessary to return to the simple meaning of the verse "all my people shall be sustained by your word." Practically all those who establish it interpret Yishak in the sense of "shall be sustained."
The translation as kiss, introduced by Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra*, is here much more distant, although it relates to the practice of kissing the king. Such an interpretation, nevertheless, is given only by commentaries that depart from the simple meaning (...).
It seems to me that one can explain why this meaning is considered more distant from the simple sense of the verse. First of all, it would lead to translating it thus: "according to your word, all my people will kiss me" or "by your mouth, all my people will be kissed" — two readings that one finds only with difficulty in the words of the verse, although one finds the equivalent of the latter in the Mishnah.
In my opinion, one must therefore translate "all my people shall be sustained by your word" and tell students that the language of the Torah sometimes has a reduced number of references and that it is possible to find therein a term used only once in a certain sense, as the Rambam* in particular underlines.
You surely know that Rabbi Saadya Gaon*, the first, wrote a book to comment on rare expressions found in the manuscripts. You will consult, in this regard, the bibliographic compilation Otzar Yisrael*.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate deliverance,
Rav Menachem Schneerson
Director of the executive committee
We hope to have available, in the coming days, some calendars. We will then send twenty copies to the address you indicated to us.
The Targum*, the Septuagint, and the Vulgate translate Yishak as "shall be heard," which is not a literal interpretation but remains nevertheless closer to the simple meaning than the kiss, which is a sign of honor but does not allude to the commandment.
