Greetings and blessings,

You ask me if you should wear the tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam*. You will no doubt endeavor to pray in purity (note: in particular, by preceding the prayer with a ritual immersion). Indeed, you know the holiness of tefillin*, for if the mitre of the Kohen Gadol* is holy, how much more so are the tefillin*, in accordance with the well-known explanation of our Sages*. It is therefore judicious to wear them.

You say that one who does not himself wear the tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam* cannot write them. This point has already been discussed by the Decisors* (note: see, on this subject, Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5223). According to their conclusion, one should not apply, in this matter, the principle that "one who does not bind them does not write them" — a fortiori if he refrains from doing so out of concupiscence, as stated at the beginning of chapter 39. However, at least a priori, it is of course preferable that the one who writes them be someone who wears them. The opinions in this matter are set forth in the Measef LeChol HaMachanos* and the Shulchan Melachim* on the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch*.

You surely maintain the three daily studies — in the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* — in addition to the studies you pursue within the framework of the Yeshivah*. May Hashem grant you success.

בשאלתו אם להניח תפילין דר"ת.

בודאי ישתדל ככל האפשרי שתהי' תפלתו בטהרה, וכידוע קדושת תפילין בכלל וק"ו מקדושת הציץ כמרז"ל הידוע, ולכן מהנכון להניחם.

במ"ש דמי שאינו מניח תפילין דר"ת אין לו לכותבם, כבר שקלו וטרו בזה, ואף המסקנא הוא דלא על זה קאי מארז"ל כל שאינו בקשירה אינו בכתיבה, (וכש"כ מלתיאבון, ר"ס לט), בכ"ז לכתחילה עכ"פ פשיטא דטוב ונכון שיכתבם המניח תפילין אלו (הדעות בזה נקבצו ב' מאסף לכל המחנות ובס' שלחן מלכים על קצש"ע).

בודאי שומר שלשת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא נוסף על השיעורים אשר בסדרי הישיבה, והשי"ת יצליחו.
