I was horrified yesterday when your brother told me, in the course of a discussion, that your father purchased a place for you to travel on a ship whose crew is Jewish (note: see Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5534) and which continues its journey during the holy Shabbos* — which constitutes, unfortunately, a transgression of the sacred day by hundreds of Jews and, moreover, a desecration of the Name of Hashem for the entire people of Israel. Indeed, it is proclaimed that this ship and its revenue, which includes the fares (note: Israeli pounds) paid by your father, benefit the entire Jewish people. And one pays these fares for the purpose of transgressing labors that the Torah* declares forbidden on Shabbos*, which Jews perform with the ship's machinery, in full view of everyone. Nevertheless, some have no knowledge of the current functioning of ships. They therefore claim the opposite of the reality — as one can observe with one's own eyes — and say that Shabbos* is not transgressed on board when the ships continue on their way on that day.

Naturally, I said all of this to your brother, although I did not see the purpose of emphasizing to him the responsibility of your father, who sent you this ticket. Nevertheless, you are near your father, and you are obligated to honor him. For this reason, with all necessary respect, as our Torah* requires, you must explain to him what has just been said and prevent him from acting in this way in the future.

Of course, I am aware of what is said — that a certain Rav gave permission in this matter. But as you know, the Rosh* explains in tractate Bava Kamma*, chapter 4, paragraph 4, that the Halachah* follows Rav for a prohibition and Shmuel for a financial matter. Indeed, Shmuel devoted himself to financial matters more than Rav. The Halachah* therefore accepts his opinion in that domain. Now, all those of whom it is said that they permit such a practice — asking them to please excuse me and without wishing to show them any disrespect — apparently have no knowledge of how machinery currently functions. They rely on testimony that was reported to them. And one can see the harm that results from this.

נבהלתי אתמול כשסיפר לי אחיו במשך הדבורים, אשר האב שי' קונה בשבילו כרטיס לנסיעה באני' שכל הצוות שלה הם בני ישראל ונמצאת בדרכה בשבת קדש, ז.א.

חילול שבת קדש בפרהסיא של מאות ישראל ר"ל, ונוסף על זה גם - הענין דחילול שם שמים בשם כלל ישראל, כיון שמכריזים אשר האני' וההכנסה שלה - שבתוכם גם הלירות ששילם אביו שי' - נהנה מהם כלל ישראל, ומשלמים הלירות ובעד מלאכות דאורייתא האסורות בשבת ונעשות במכונות האני' ע"י בני ישראל ר"ל ונעשות הן גלוי לעין כל [אלא שישנם כאלה שאין להם כל ידיעה במכונות האני' כמו שהם בפועל עתה, ואומרים היפך המציאות הנראית במוחש, אשר אין מלאכה המחללת את השבת באניות הנמצאות בדרכם במשך יום השבת].

מובן שאמרתי כל הנ"ל גם לאחיו שי' - אף שלא ראיתי תועלת להדגיש בעיניו אשמת האב ששלח לו הכרטיס, אבל כיון שהוא נמצא אצל אביו ומחויב בכבודו - מחויב מטעם זה גם [באופן של כבוד ע"פ ציווי תורתנו] להסבירו את האמור ולמנעו מפעולה כגון דא בעתיד.

פשוט שידוע לי אשר אומרים בשם רב פלוני, שהוא התיר את הדבר. אבל כבר ידוע דברי הרא"ש (ב"ק פ"ד ס"ד) בהלכה כרב באיסורי וכשמואל בממונא, שכיון ששמואל עסק בדיני ממונות יותר מרב, הלכה כמותו במקצוע זה, וכל אותם שאומרים בשמם שמתירים הם את האמור, הרי (לאחרי בקשת סליחתם וכבודם במקומם מונח), כנראה אין להם ידיעה כלל בעבודת המכונות במצב ההווה, ונשענים הם על עדות, ורואים במוחש הקלקלה שנגרמה עי"ז.
