First day of Selichos* 5717

Brooklyn, New York

To the attention of Mr. Yitzchak (note: Mr. I. Damyel, see Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5471),

Greetings and blessings,

After a long interruption, I was pleased to receive your letter, in which you describe what you did during the vacation. Of course, you have my full agreement — and I join you in this. Indeed, you did well to accept delivering the talks to which you refer, concerning the mitzvos* applicable in practice. I congratulate you all the more for being, as you write, the intermediary between the Chassidim* and the various kibbutzim* that are visited.

You refer to "Israeli consciousness." I have already expressed my opinion and explained several times that notions that are not perfectly defined can prove very dangerous — especially when they have been recently introduced into common parlance. Indeed, most of the newspapers, magazines, and books that are published (note: in Eretz Yisrael) are the work of people who, for the time being, do not follow the path of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. These notions are therefore used to sow even greater confusion. Sometimes they are used to shift from right to left, as does the Conservative movement and, more broadly, all adherents of religious compromise, who effect a junction in only one direction — downward from high to low and from right to left. Indeed, they bring absolutely no one back to faith and Torah*. I have seen, in many magazines, this notion of "Israeli consciousness" already being used as a substitute for all the sacred values of Israel. And sterile ideas are introduced into this concept — ideas that not only are of no interest and cannot improve the bond between a Jew and the Elokim of Israel, but are even irrelevant in relations between people.

It is said in our books that during the final moments of the exile, the darkness will be intense, to the extreme. This will be, precisely, the proof that one is nearing the end — that the redemption must reveal itself from one moment to the next. I am alluding to the well-known declaration that "the Torah* emanates from Zion and the word of Hashem from Jerusalem." Never before have the names of Zion and Jerusalem been used to intensify the darkness as much as in recent years and months. I refer not only to these physical places, but also to the concept as it is perceived in New York and, according to my information, in other countries of the diaspora* as well. Zion and Jerusalem are thus cited in order to push even more Jews away from the Torah* and the word of Hashem. Such will no doubt be the fate of the notion of "Israeli consciousness" if its content is not defined in a clear and indisputable manner — if limits are not set, noting that it can be useful in one domain, has nothing to do with another, and constitutes, in a third domain, a danger for the continuity of the divine soul — that is, for the essence and vitality of every Jew and every Jewess, in every place and at every time.

I hope you will not hold this formulation against me. Indeed, even brief reflection establishes that it is by no means too incisive, given the gravity of the issue — especially if one takes into account all the articles recently published, whose obvious message is that it suffices to be sincere, that one can dispense with the Torah* of Moshe given on Mount Sinai and the teachings it delivers for human life. Indeed, the people of Israel receive a global mission which, at the end of times, will also be universal, applying to all nations. This is the "Israeli consciousness," whose aspects are, for the time being, hidden and concealed, but which, in any case, does not too strongly impose upon man the observance of the commandments and prohibitions. This is self-evident. However, the assurance has been given that in these final moments of the exile, everything will be clarified and specified. One may therefore hope that this will also be the case for this imprecise concept. And the sooner the better.

On the occasion of the new year, which approaches for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I hereby send you and all your family my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

With my deference and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
