To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, of manifold knowledge, Rav Sh. Y. (note: Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin of Jerusalem, see letter no. 5360),

Greetings and blessings,

We are approaching the luminous day of 18 Elul, date of the birth of the two great luminaries: the Baal Shem Tov* and the Alter Rebbe*. And you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on the name of Chai Elul*: "This day breathes vitality into Elul" (note: Chai means "living" and has the numerical value of eighteen).

May Hashem grant that from this day onward, and in its eve which prepares it, the warmth, vitality, and light grow ever greater, for one must know elevation in the domain of holiness. It shall be so in all the domains described by the verses whose initials form the name of Elul* — which includes the three domains of the service of Hashem: Torah*, prayer, and good deeds, as well as the crown of a good name that surpasses them — in concrete action here below, and through teshuvah* above. All of this together appears in allusion in the name of Elul*. And our Sages say (note: regarding the Shofar; so too in the service of Hashem — it is precisely submission that leads to the highest elevation): "The simpler it is, the better." Be inscribed and sealed, then, for a good and sweet year.

I have asked that the possibility be explored of preparing a translation of the discourse explaining the difference between the approach of Beis Shammai* and that of Beis Hillel* — in terms of potential and its realization (note: presumably from Yiddish to Hebrew; see letter no. 5604).

... ובפרוס יום הבהיר ח"י אלול, יום הולדת שני המאורות הגדולים הבעש"ט ורבנו הזקן, הנה יהי רצון שכפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בהשם ח"י אלול, בריינגט אריין חיות אין אלול, הנה מתחיל מיום זה ובערב יום זה שהוא הכנה לזה, יכנס החום החיות והאור באופן דהולך וגדל ומעלין בקדש, ובכל הענינים דר"ת אלול, שכולל ג' הקוין דתורה עבודה וגמ"ח וכתר שם טוב שעולה ע"ג, מעשה בפועל למטה וענין התשובה למעלה, שגם זה הרי נרמז בתיבת אלול. וע"פ מאמר רז"ל כל דפשיט מעלי טפי: עס זאל זיין א כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה.
