Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh* of the month of mercy, in which you tell me about your solitude. You say that you would like to live in another place, but you know that where you are, you have the possibility of disseminating Chassidus*.

You will understand the contradiction that exists between the beginning and the end of your letter. Indeed, if it is possible to disseminate Chassidus* in that place, it is clear that you are not alone there, for one who is a receptacle for Chassidus* possesses indeed a Chassidic* existence — revealed, or at the very least perceptible to those who reflect upon it. Moreover, how can one feel loneliness when "Hashem stands before him" in that place, when He "considers him, examines his kidneys and heart to verify that he serves Him as he should," as the Alter Rebbe* indicates at the beginning of chapter 41 of the Tanya*? Then, immediately after this, the Alter Rebbe* states his conclusion: "One must therefore serve Him... One must reflect at length on this thought." Meditate, then, on this conclusion and you will see at once that you are not alone — quite the contrary. Even if what you write corresponds, on the whole, to reality, it is nonetheless said: "I have set before you life and good." Indeed, one can use for the development of the domain of holiness everything that belongs to Klipas Noga* (note: the force of evil that retains the possibility of elevating toward holiness) — the intermediary between evil and the domain of holiness, the vitality of this material and coarse world — as explained in chapter 37 of the Tanya*, which you will study at length. Now, considering the conditions of the place as you describe them, two possibilities indeed exist (note: elevation toward holiness or descent toward evil). And therein lies the proof — the criterion for determining the source that suggests this reflection — as indicated in the Hayom Yom* at the date of 23 Sivan (note: if the reflection diminishes action, it comes from the forces of evil).

You conclude your letter by telling me that you are preparing for the great day of 18 Elul (note: date of the birth of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe) that is approaching, for the blessing. May Hashem grant that you achieve true success in that place, and that you act there in accordance with the teachings of the two great luminaries who were revealed on that day. Both of them showed the importance of serving Hashem with joy and enthusiasm, of putting into practice the precept: "You shall come to his aid" (note: toward the body — not breaking it through mortifications), as the Hayom Yom* explains at the date of 28 Shevat, which you will consult. It is said that the commandment "You shall love your fellow as yourself" constitutes one single entity with this other commandment: "You shall love Hashem your Elokim." In light of all this, I await good news of everything that has been said.

You say nothing of your state of health. This is no doubt a sign that all is well. You will kindly confirm this to me clearly.

With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, and to convey good news,
