Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 8 Elul, in which you tell me that I have surely received the commentary of the Rashba* on Tractate Bava Basra, which you published. For the time being, I have not received it, and from what your letter indicates, it should reach me in the coming days. Enclosed please find a check for the shipping costs.

May Hashem grant that your abilities, applied to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, develop — not only for the Torah* itself, but also for those who study it, or more precisely, above all for the latter. Our Sages say, indeed, that "seven elements preceded the world: the Torah*, Israel...but Israel preceded all the others." Such is also the teaching that the Torah* delivers for the conduct of a Jew, and you know what our Sages say in Tractate Kesubos 103b: "How great are the actions of Chiya" (note: who taught Torah to children so that it would not be forgotten) — including in comparison to the episode of Rabbi Chanina (note: whose action was aimed at personal elevation). This is why the secrets of the Torah*, its profound dimension, have been widely revealed and even disseminated, so that they reach the outside. You know the parable stated on this subject by the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch* — that of the prince and the most precious jewel of the royal crown. This is cited in HaTamim, Vol. 2, p. 49.

On the occasion of the new year, which approaches for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I hereby send you and all your family my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

במענה על מכתבו מח' אלול, בו כותב שבטח נתקבל כבר הרשב"א על ב"ב שהדפיסו וכו'.

והנה לע"ע לא נתקבל וכנראה ממכתב כת"ר יתקבל ימים אלו, ומוסגר בזה המחאה להוצאות המשלוח.

ויהי רצון שיוסיף חילים בעניני תורה והמצוה, ולא רק בתורה אלא גם בלומדי' ואפשר יותר נכון לומר - העיקר בלומדי' וכמרז"ל הידוע שבעה דברים קדמו לעולם התורה וישראל וכו' ומחשבתם של ישראל קדמה לכל דבר, והרי זהו ג"כ מהוראות תורתנו בהנוגע להנהגת איש הישראלי, וידוע הפסק כמה גדולים מעשי חייא אפילו לגבי מעשה רבי חנינא (כתובות קג, ב).

אשר זהו ג"כ הטעם לגילוי רזין דאורייתא פנימיות התורה בשופי ובאופן דהפצה עד שיגיעו גם חוצה וכנודע משל רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע מבן המלך והאבן טובה אשר בכתר המלך (נדפס בהתמים חוברת ב' ע' מט).

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
