Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 7 Elul, in which you tell me that your son, to whom Hashem will grant long life, has obtained from the consulate an extension of his passport. You therefore ask that he devote part of the time during which he studies our holy Torah* to learning a trade. No doubt you yourself see the contradiction between these two proposals. The first affirms that your son observes with his own physical eyes, in what concerns him, the blessing of Hashem, Who gives the Torah*. Consequently, the second is a request that he reduce the time devoted to this Torah* in order to learn a trade.

I hope that you wrote all of this out of a father's love for his son. Now, our Sages say, referring to everyone, that "love upends the established order." In my opinion, you must take into account the age of your son and the fact that the present years are the most propitious for studying our holy Torah*, which is called the Torah* of life, for it also brings life in the most literal sense, in this material world. It is said, indeed: "If you walk in My statutes" — and Rashi* explains: "By exerting your efforts in the Torah*." And: "If you observe My mitzvos*" — with all the blessings stated in this parshah*.

You must therefore encourage your son to study the Torah* with the greatest vigor. For our Sages give the assurance that "one who makes efforts sees them crowned with success." He will therefore succeed in his study, provide broad and sincere satisfaction to all who love him — and first and foremost, of course, to his father.

I take this opportunity to remind you of the necessity of maintaining the three studies that concern everyone, established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. These studies are of the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and they are well known. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future. As we heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, these studies have a positive effect in various domains.

במענה על מכתבו מז' אלול, בו כותב אשר בנו שליט"א הצליח אצל הקונסול בקשר להארכת הפ"פ שלו וכו' וע"כ מבקש שחלק מזמנו יקח מלימוד תוה"ק ללימוד איזה מקצוע.

ובטח גם בעצמו יראה הסתירה שבין שני הענינים אשר תוכן הראשון הוא שבנו שי' רואה גם בעיני בשר ברכת השי"ת שהוא נותן התורה בענינו, וכתוצאה מזה באה בקשה שבנו ימעט בלימוד התורה וילמוד איזה מקצוע.

תקותי שכתב האמור מתום אהבת אב לבן אשר על אהבה בכלל אמרו חז"ל בהנוגע לכל אחד, שלפעמים מקלקלת את השורה.

ולדעתי בהביא בחשבון את הגיל של בנו שי' ואשר עתה הם השנים המסוגלים ללימוד תוה"ק הנקראת תורת חיים הכוללת גם חיים כפשוטו בעולם הזה וכאמרו אם בחקתי תלכו ופרש"י שתהיו עמלים בתורה, ואת מצותי תשמורו וגו' וככל הברכות האמורים בפרשה.

צריך הוא לעודד ולחזק את בנו שילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה הכי גדולה וכהבטחת רז"ל ידעת - ומצאת ויצליח בלימודו לרוב נחת האמיתי של כל אוהביו ולכל לראש בודאי אביו שי'.

ואנצל הזדמנות זו לעוררו על שמירת שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בחומש תהלים ותניא, ועכ"פ ישמור עליהם מכאן ולהבא, אשר כפי ששמענו כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר סגולה הם לכמה ענינים.
