Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Tuesday, in which you tell me about your son — what he did before coming to continue his studies here at the yeshivah*. You then formulate proposals for the future. Now, your son has been here for only a relatively short time. It is therefore difficult to decide what is good for him among all the proposals you formulate, or yet others. He must spend a certain time here so that one can observe the influence this new environment exerts upon him.

I see from your letter that you are a doctor. If this means that you are a physician, it is surely unnecessary to emphasize the following point to you. Our era has caused multiple upheavals and disappointments throughout the world and therefore in every person's surroundings. Unfortunately, we have not yet achieved calm on earth and in society. It follows that particular precautions must be taken in dealing with young people. One must not undermine the equilibrium and tranquility of their mind by suggesting doubts to them. When a young man feels good in a context that puts into practice the teachings of our Torah*, the Torah* of life, he must absolutely not be disturbed. All of this is even more evident for one who reflects on the life of the young generation in our era.

I read with pleasure, at the end of your letter, that your son puts into practice the teachings of the Torah*. Perhaps this is the reason why he wishes to know elevation in Torah* and mitzvos*. He is not content with the level attained until now, however positive it may be, for the Torah* demands that one rise in the domain of holiness. I have good hope, in view of all this, that peace will prevail, that your relations will be excellent, and that the One Who gives the Torah* and commands the mitzvos* will bless you, grant you success and much true satisfaction from your son.

במענה על מכתבו מיום השלישי, בו כותב אודות בנו שי' ואת אשר עבר עליו מקודם בואו ללמוד הנה לישיבה, ובקש עם זה מציע מה לעשות בהנוגע להבא... כיון שבנו שי' נמצא כאן זה זמן קצר לפי ערך, קשה להחליט את הטוב לפניו, אם כהצעת כ' במכתבו או באופן אחר עד שיעבור משך זמן מספיק בכדי לראות ההשפעה של הסביבה החדשה על בנו שי'.

כיון שרואה הנני במכתבו שד"ר הנה, ואם הפי' - היינו רופא, בודאי גם זה למותר לעוררו, אשר את בני הנוער ובפרט בתקופתנו רבת השינוים והזעזועים בכל העולם כולו ובמילא גם בסביבתו של כל אחד אשר לדאבוננו לא זכינו במנוחה בעולם ובצבור, הנה כל זה דורש זהירות יתירה בהיחסים עם הנוער, שלא למעט חוסם נפשם ומנוחת נפשם ולהטיל ספיקות בעניניהם, ובאם מי שהוא מהנוער מרגיש עצמו טוב בסביבה המתאימה להוראת תורתנו תורת חיים, יש להזהר ביותר מלהפריע מנוחתו, וכנ"ל מובן עוד יותר מהכתוב להמתבונן בחיי הדור הצעיר בתקופתנו.

נעם לי לקרות בסיום מכתבו אשר בנו מתנהג כדתה של תורה ואפשר שזהו סיבת וטעם בנו שי' שרוצה לעלות יותר בתורה ומצותי', ואינו מסתפק במדריגתו עד עתה איך שתהי' טובה, כיון שהתורה אומרת מעלין בקדש.

תקותי חזקה ע"פ הנ"ל אשר יתרבה השלום ויוטבו היחסים שלהם ביותר וביותר, ונותן התורה ומצוה המצוה יברכו ויצליחו ברוב נחת אמיתי מבנו שי'.
