Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the day on which "good" was said twice (note: Tuesday, the third day of creation). You describe to me briefly what you have experienced, in particular recently, in the position you occupy (note: that of a teacher in a school) — your difficulties, to the point that you were compelled, in your view, to announce that you were leaving this work. You conclude by detailing the proposals that have been made to you for the future. And you ask me what I think.
You do not say clearly in your letter whether your departure from this place is irreversible or whether you can still reconsider your decision. If that is indeed the case, you must, in my opinion, ask yourself in a profound way whether this departure is judicious — or even, to use a more incisive expression, whether you have the right to do it. Indeed, you yourself describe your success in this place, yet you have not yet brought your mission to its conclusion. There are still classes that have not adopted the conduct they should. Your own class is only in the process of improvement. Now, our Sages say that "one cannot learn from everyone." Who knows if someone else will have the appropriate influence on them? It is clear that the arguments you advance must be taken into account and analyzed deeply. However, in this analysis, one must invoke the criterion stated in the Hayom Yom*, at the date of 23 Sivan: "Consider this rule carefully and always keep it in mind: every obstacle to what favors the service of Hashem or that orients toward it, however elevated it may be, is nothing but a stratagem of the animal soul."
If, at the conclusion of this in-depth analysis — and especially after consulting those who are objective in this matter — you arrive at the conclusion that you must indeed leave this place, or if your return to restore your positive influence is truly impossible, you will consider, among all the proposals you mention, the one that enables you to separate the wheat from the chaff — there where no other person or institution can devote themselves to this task. You know how important a mitzvah* is that can be fulfilled by no one else, as our Sages emphasize in Tractate Moed Katan 9a-b.
There is a second point in your letter which, more profoundly, is not at all the second but merely another expression of the preceding point. It concerns your relationship with Chassidus* and the Chassidim* of Chabad*. You know my view on this subject. In our era especially, it is indispensable to base one's conduct on Chassidus*, for the darkness is intense and in recent years it has been intensifying. A great addition is therefore necessary on the side of light and holiness. This addition does not concern only application and concrete action — even though, in the words of the Mishnah*, "the act is essential." It must illuminate, enliven, warm, and inflame in the proper manner, and this too is fundamental. In our era, people want to understand everything, to grasp everything. Due to our many sins, what is based solely on submission does not last as long as it should and does not have the necessary intensity. The clarity, vitality, warmth, and addition must therefore be connected to understanding. There lies a fundamental principle of Chabad* Chassidus*.
In other words, and as it concerns you: Divine Providence has granted you the ability to influence young people who are preparing to build Jewish homes in the coming years. By guiding them, you are therefore addressing an entire household. Consequently, it is imperative that you make use of these abilities in this matter, to the fullest extent possible, with all the vitality, warmth, and light possible. The easiest means — and perhaps the only one — for achieving this is to invest yourself fully in Chassidus*: by studying its teaching, by adopting its ways, through your thoughts, words, and actions, on a daily basis and in the proper manner.
Our era is not conducive to an advancement by stages — beginning by studying and deepening, then drawing conclusions for thoughts, words, and actions, then deciding to influence others in this direction. For one does not have the time necessary for all of this, especially since what is at stake here is influencing young people. These three stages must therefore be pursued simultaneously. Moreover, to a certain extent, you already possess knowledge of and access to all these stages. And nothing can withstand the sincere determination one can have in this matter.
The end of your letter seems to indicate that you are not seeking a suitable match in the proper way — I mean that you do not even mention it. You will agree that this is particularly astonishing. Basing myself on the statement of our Sages that "one confers merit upon a person even in his absence," I will take the liberty of mentioning, in the request for blessing on your behalf, the possibility of finding a good match, materially and spiritually, very soon. Without a doubt, you will also pursue natural means with the urgency that is called for, as our Torah* requires. May Hashem grant that you give me very soon good news of this, as well as of everything said above. The merit of all those whom you have brought closer to Hashem will protect you in this fundamental domain.
In anticipation of good news of all this, and with my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
