Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that thoughts disturb you sometimes during prayer. The solution is as follows: you must pray with a Siddur*, in a state of purity. Likewise, you tell me that your ardor in study is not what it should be. You must reflect on the meaning of the words of the prayer, at least their plain meaning. Likewise, you will engrave in your mind what is explained at the beginning of chapter 41 of the Tanya*: "Hashem stands before him... He examines the kidneys and the heart." When you feel your ardor in study diminishing, you will meditate once more on this idea.

You ask me about the reasons for Jewish customs. You specify that people ask you questions on this subject. On this point, you will consult the Chassidic* Rabbanim in your surroundings, who will guide you. However, it must be clear that your essential objective is not to seek reasons and to answer questions. You must study with vigor and ardor the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus*. Now, our Sages say: "If you toil, you will succeed."

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אשר לפעמים מחשבות מבלבלות אותו בעת התפלה.

הנה העצה לזה שיתפלל מתוך הסידור דוקא, ובטהרה.

כן כותב אודות התמדתו שאינה במילואה.

והעצה לזה להתבונן בפירוש המלות, כפשוטו עכ"פ, של התפלה, וכן להיות חקוק בזכרונו תוכן הענין הנזכר בריש פ' מ"א בתניא, שה' נצב עליו וכו' ובוחן כליותיו ולבו וכו' וכשירגיש חולשה בהתמדה, יתבונן עוד הפעם בתוכן ענין זה.

במה ששואל אודות טעמים ומנהגי ישראל, אשר לפי כתבו, שואלים אותו בזה.

הנה יפנה בזה אל רבני אנ"ש אשר בסביבתו והם יורוהו. אבל מובן שאין זה מעיקר ענינו לחפש טעמים ולתרץ קושיות, כי אם ללמוד בהתמדה ושקידה בתורת הנגלה וחסידות ואמרו רז"ל יגעת ומצאת.
