Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 21 Menachem Av. It appears to indicate that the teachers of the network (note: the schools of Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch in the Holy Land) had no contact with the students throughout the entire duration of the vacation. One does not complain about what is past, but may Hashem grant that you consult sufficiently early to determine the means of staying in contact with them during the upcoming vacations — which does not necessarily mean only the long summer vacation. Indeed, one must exert a positive influence on the students whenever they are free from their studies, which also includes Shabbos* and festivals, for example.

You make reference to the examinations. You tell me that you attended the appropriate courses but that you did not take the examinations. Yet even after reading the justifications you give, I still do not understand why you did not take them. For these examinations can do no harm, and perhaps you would have passed at least a part of them, or even all of them, as has often been observed. You say that you have a poor memory. It is clear that this is a stratagem of the evil inclination, which strives to cause a person to fall into indolence, seeking for this purpose every pretext, even the most varied. No doubt you will therefore present yourself at the next examinations and, in the meantime, you will do everything necessary to pass them successfully. Cease, then, telling yourself that you are not capable or that you have a poor memory!

You mention the network and the position you occupy within it. In this regard, the principle applies that "salvation comes from many counselors." A person is not objective about himself, being personally involved. After having presented the reasons and explanations concerning yourself, you will defer to the decision of the majority, who knows the value of these schools. Even if you are only beginning in this position, you will be able to compensate for this handicap by giving the necessary attention and reflecting on the gravity of the responsibility at stake. When one is far away, it is difficult to indicate precisely what should be done, all the more so since this is not necessary in the present case, as I have shown.

I send you my blessing for success in communal matters and in your mission, which has a sacred character. This will increase your success in what concerns you personally, as well as all the members of your family, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages that "to whoever adds (note: efforts in the service of Hashem), one adds (note: blessings)."

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מכ"א מנ"א, ומובן שמצער הנראה ממכתבו שלא הי' למורי הרשת קשרים עם תלמידי הרשת במשך כל ימי החופש. אף שאין צועקין על העבר הנה יה"ר שבעוד מועד יתייעצו ביניהם איך לעמוד עמהם בקשר בימי החופש הבע"ל, ולאו דוקא חופש הארוך דימי הקיץ כ"א איך להשפיע על התלמידים-ות בעת החופש שלהם מבתי הספר במשך חדשי זמן הלימוד, ז.א. בשבתות וימים טובים וכיו"ב.

במ"ש אודות הבחינות שלמד בקורסים המתאימים אבל לא הלך לבחינה, גם לאחרי קריאת הטעמים שכותב בזה אינה מובנת כלל אי הליכתו, שהרי בודאי אין בזה מקום להיזק, ואפשר הי' מצליח בחלק מהבחינות ואפשר גם בכולם, וכנראה בכמה מקרים, כי מה שכותב אודות חלישות זכרון שלו, מובן שאין זה אלא עצת היצר שמתפקידו להפיל את האדם לעצלות, ומחפש אמתלאות וגם משונות, ובטח עכ"פ ילך לבחינות הקרובות, ובינתים יעשה את הדרוש בכדי להצליח בזה ויסיח דעתו לגמרי שאינו מסוגל, הזכרון וכו'.

מ"ש אודות עניני הרשת ותפקידו שם, על כגון דא נאמר ותשועה ברוב יועץ, וכיון שאדם נוגע וקרוב אצל עצמו, הנה לאחרי שמציעים הטעמים ונמוקים של עצמו, סומכים על החלטת הרוב שטובת המוסדות יקרה גם להם, ואם אפילו רק מתחיל הוא בתפקידו הרי בשימת לב הראוי' והתבוננות בהאחריות שבדבר יתוקן, וקשה להורות בריחוק מקום ובפרט שאין צורך בדבר כנ"ל.

בברכה להצלחה בענינים הכללים ובמלאכתו מלאכת שמים שעי"ז יתוסף גם בהצלחת הענינים הפרטים שלו ושל כל ב"ב שיחיו וכמרז"ל כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו, ובברכת כוח"ט.
