To Mr. Yisrael (note: Mr. I. Fogel of San Diego),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 19 Menachem Av, in which you describe the visit of the young men, yeshivah* students — Rabbis Shalom Dov Shem Tov and Shmuel Pesach Bagomilski — as well as their self-sacrifice in carrying out the mission entrusted to them. My satisfaction is twofold: firstly, because they are faithfully fulfilling this mission, and secondly, because they found Jews who know how to appreciate their effort at its true worth, responding to the call of their mission. Moreover, concrete, daily action has even resulted from it.

I hope that, in the expression of the Mishnah*, you are "generous toward others." You will therefore make full use of the influence you exert on those around you in order to spread the Torah* of life and the mitzvos*, of which it is said: "You shall live by them." In this way, you will draw increased blessing from Hashem upon your surroundings, in all needs — in life in its most literal sense: children, health, material prosperity. In this way, Jews will be strengthened wherever they are — outside of Eretz Yisrael* as well as in that land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days.

Indeed, Jews share a collective responsibility. And you know the plain meaning and the allusive meaning of this expression — a Jew is intertwined with another Jew, a Jew is agreeable to another Jew (note: see letter no. 2982). To accomplish all of this, one must spread and strengthen Yiddishkeit* in the greatest and widest circles of our people of Israel. I conclude by expressing the wish that you be able to inform me of good news regarding all that has been said, and from time to time multiply this good news.
