Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the end of Tammuz, whose delivery was somewhat delayed. In it, you describe your family situation and your relationship with your wife. You know the teaching given by our Sages regarding the wife of one's youth, as it is said: "Can you turn away from the wife of your youth?" Moreover, Hashem has granted you the blessing of having children who are being educated in the way of Torah* and mitzvos*. A divorce is therefore out of the question, Heaven forbid. For it is the very last resort, after having made the greatest effort to establish peace, in accordance with the teaching of our Torah*, Torah of life and Torah of peace.
From what you say in your letter, it appears that you have a great influence on your wife. However, until now you have been absorbed by your business affairs and have therefore not devoted yourself sufficiently to this, or at the very least have not given the necessary thought to the manner of exercising this influence. That is why you have not had great success. Nevertheless, this enables you to establish that every effort is justified, all the more so since in this very manner she herself will draw closer and adopt, step by step, a life based on Torah*. She will not do so solely in order not to lose you, but gradually she will change her outlook.
Naturally, there are particular situations in which, according to the Torah*, a separation is required, Heaven forbid, but these can only be taken into account after having obtained formal proof that it is not possible to introduce changes. If you write me your name and your mother's name, as well as your wife's name and her mother's name and those of your children, I will mention them at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. It would be good for you to maintain the practice of reading Tehillim* according to their monthly division each day after the morning prayer. Likewise, each weekday before the prayer, you shall give a few coins to tzedakah*.
With blessing to convey good news of all this,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
