To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, S.B., who is called Dr. Ulman (note: see letter no. 5358),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter, together with the two studies that were enclosed. In accordance with your request, I have reviewed the proofs, and I must say that your explanation regarding the method of preventing drug resistance seems to me particularly sound. Indeed, one may wonder why this has not been done until now, seeing that such events have occurred repeatedly in the history of science. The past should have provided lessons for the future, and these occurrences should therefore have become less and less frequent. Obviously, my aim is not to express surprise, but rather to highlight that research in the direction you propose may perhaps have already been conducted — even though it is beyond doubt that before publishing this study, you must have performed all the necessary verifications.
In this connection, and although this is not my profession, I notice in the tables included in these proofs medications and treatments that were prescribed one hundred and fifty years ago or more. I am surprised by this as well, for during all this time, they must have been used multiple times, being modified and adapted. It is therefore impossible that they do not present new aspects, in one direction or another (note: in which case these new aspects should have appeared in the tables). Indeed, these tables do not trace the history of medicine but must be useful for curing and treating. Only the most recent conclusions should therefore be retained. Moreover, our Torah* enunciates a principle that is perfectly logical: "The halachah* is ruled according to the latest authorities." For those who issued them knew the position of their predecessors. Naturally, this remark is formulated by someone for whom this is not his profession and who speaks solely as an outside observer.
I extend my blessing for success in your research, as well as in your work of healing the soul through education based on sacred values, and the body.
With my respects,
