Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 2 Menachem Av, in which you describe what has unfortunately befallen your daughters in recent years.
You must verify as quickly as possible whether your marriage to your wife may have had the effect of causing an affront to a young man or a young woman (note: with whom there may have been a prior engagement, and who would have been humiliated by its annulment). You must establish the facts to the fullest extent possible and determine whether there is someone from whom pardon must be sought, or at the very least, do so in the presence of ten people (note: if the person concerned cannot be present). You shall also determine whether financial compensation is necessary.
May Hashem grant that you succeed in carrying out this investigation in the proper manner. Then all of this will disappear, as it is said: "Your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for" — terms that can be connected to the following explanation of the Alter Rebbe* (note: in Chapter 2 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah): "To redeem oneself before Hashem and to bring satisfaction to one's Creator." It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked. As for your wife, she shall give a few coins to tzedakah* each weekday morning and before the lighting of the candles.

במענה על מכתבו מב' מנ"א בו כותב ע"ד המאורעות ל"ע ול"ע שקרו לבנותיו שתליט"א בשנים האחרונות.
צריך לברר בהקדם, כי כנראה בהשידוך שלו עם זוג' תחי' היתה איזה פגיעה בכבוד בן או בת ישראל, ויש להשתדל בבירור זה ככל האפשרי, וגם לברר אם יש מקום לבקשת מחילה, או עכ"פ בקשת מחילה בפני עשרה מישראל. וכן אם שייך בזה איזה פצויים של כסף וכו'.
ויהי רצון שישתדלו בבירור הנ"ל כדבעי ועי"ז יסורו כל הענינים וע"ד מה שנאמר וסר עונך וחטאתך תכופר, וכפירוש רבינו הזקן מל' לכפר לפני הוי' להיות נחת רוח לקונו.
מהנכון לבדוק תפליו וזוג' תחי' תפריש בכל יום חול בבקר ולפני הדה"נ איזה פרוטות לצדקה.
