Greetings and blessings,

If you sell your shares now, you will incur a loss, and that is therefore out of the question. The merit of your commitment to the Lubavitch* institutions, of which the travelers (note: presumably yeshivah students visiting communities during the summer) have informed me, will surely protect you, so that the promise shall be fulfilled for you in its most literal sense: "You shall tithe so that you may become wealthy" — that is, to broaden the source of your income. You shall therefore not sell your shares until they allow you to realize a profit.

We are approaching the month of mercy and joy (note: the month of Elul*, see letter no. 5656). You know that the name Elul* is formed by the initials of the verse: "a man to his friend and gifts to the poor." Our Sages explain in this regard: "'A Man' — this is the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is said: 'Hashem, Man of war.'" Then, all Jews are called brothers and friends. As for one who cannot receive this title, he at least falls into the second category — that of "gifts to the poor" — granted to those who thirst for everything.

May Hashem grant that with joy and enthusiasm you increase the practice of Torah* and mitzvos*, in particular the fixed time for the study of Chassidus*, the addition to the giving of tzedakah*. Indeed, yesterday we experienced a day (note: the 15th of Av) of which our Sages say: "Whoever adds (note: efforts to serve Hashem) receives increase (note: in blessings)."

והרי מתקרבים אנו לימי חדש הרחמים והשמחה, והרי ידוע דאלו"ל ר"ת איש לרעהו ומתנות לאביונים, וידוע דרז"ל איש זה הקב"ה שנאמר ה' איש מלחמה וגו' וקורא הוא לכל אחד מבני ישראל בשם אחים ורעים, ואפילו זה שאינו זוכה לתואר הנ"ל הרי נכנס הוא בסוג השני דמתנות לאביונים, אביון מלשון התאב לכל דבר.

ויהי רצון אשר בשמחה ובטוב לבב יוסיף בעניני תורה ומצוה, ומהם הוספה בקביעות עתים בלימוד תורת החסידות והוספה בעניני צדקה, והרי אתמול נכנסנו ביום שהבטיחו רז"ל כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו.
