To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Menachem Zev HaLevi (note: Rav M.Z. Gringlass of Montreal, see letter no. 5415),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 11 Menachem Av and the one preceding it, with their contents. I was particularly pleased with the several pages of the compendium of Chabad customs (note: which the Rebbe had asked Rav Gringlass to compile, see letter no. 5536), as well as with the spacing you provide between paragraphs. Indeed, my wish is that one who possesses this compendium should no longer need to consult the fascicles (note: the custom booklets appended to the discourses of the Frierdiker Rebbe). It is therefore necessary to reproduce in this compendium the notes found in the fascicles as well, so that it will be exhaustive.

You ask me what should be added on the page of questions. An addition will indeed be made starting from the very first paragraph. One should also add the necessity of giving tzedakah* before prayer (note: see Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, p. 7). And you will cite in the references (note: the Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "This excludes the third paragraph of your questions, which should not be disseminated") the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Tavo, page 43d, paragraphs 4 and 7.

Regarding the other paragraphs, one may wonder whether there is indeed a defined, precise, and definitive tradition. In case of doubt, it is preferable to write nothing. I do not know the pace of your work in compiling this compendium, but obviously, if it is possible to publish it during the month of Tishrei* which is approaching, that would be timely.

You will surely continue to record the customs of known Chassidim*. Some of their practices are not accepted by all, and sometimes even the opposite position is held. Despite this, I took note with pleasure of several points. And the time will come to write about this.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מי"א מנ"א והקודמו עם המוסגר בהם ומאד נהניתי מהעלים האחדים לקוטי מנהגי חב"ד, וכן ממה שמניח ריוח בין סעיף לסעיף, וכיון שכוונתי שמי שיהי' בידו הלקוט לא יצטרך לחפש בקונטרסים, לכן צריך להעתיק בהלקוט גם ההערות מהקונטרס במקום שישנן ויהי' דבר שלם.

בגליון השאלות, אם להוסיף - הנה יש להוסיף מסעיף א', וכן ע"ד נתינת צדקה לפני התפלה, ולציין מ"מ* לקו"ת תבוא (מג, ד), סעיף ד' ז.

בהנוגע לשאר הסעיפים, צ"ע אם יש בזה קבלה מוגדרה ומפורטה ומוחלטה, ובמקום ספק, שב ואל תכתוב עדיף.

איני יודע מהירות עבודתו בלקוט זה, אבל מובן שבאם הי' אפשרי להו"ל בימי חדש תשרי הבע"ל הרי הזמן גרמא הוא.

בודאי ימשיך גם ברשימות מנהגי חסידים המפורסמים, אשר אף שנמצא בהם ענינים שאינם מקובלים ומהם גם שנוהגים בהיפך, בכ"ז נהניתי מכמה ציונים שבהם, ועוד חזון למועד לכתוב עד"ז.
