Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5633 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 15 · Letter 310 · To: distingué et estimable ‘Hassid
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Menachem Av* 5717,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished and esteemed Chassid*,
who devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Tzvi (note: Rav T. Harkavy; see also letter no. 5009),
Greetings and blessings,
I am replying to your letters of the 22nd and 23rd of Tammuz*. May this initial discussion of the problem of the ships (note: Israeli ships traveling on Shabbos; see also letter no. 5534) lead to a concrete change, so that a solution conforming to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah of life, may be found. Indeed, one of the meanings of this expression is that in every place, at every era, "this Torah shall not be changed."
Our Sages* say that Hashem consulted the Torah* to create the world. It is therefore inconceivable and unthinkable that the events of the world should obstruct or prevent the fulfillment of what the Torah* states. As elementary logic establishes, it is impossible that the effect be stronger than its cause. Moreover, in this case, the effect is only a tiny fraction of the cause, and the latter is particularly lofty even as a cause, as the Alter Rebbe* indicates in the Tanya*, at page 4, defining it as "the Will and Wisdom of Hashem, which no thought can grasp." Of course, this cause has nothing in common with the worlds. Only "Hashem perceived its way and knew its place." You should consult, on this subject, the lengthy explanation in the Kuntres Acharon* of the Tanya*, at the paragraph "David, you call them songs?"
I enclose a press clipping in which it is reported that a ship left the Holy Land for Marseille on a Thursday. Such a voyage, according to all opinions, can be made without Shabbos* desecration, since it does not last six days. Now, this voyage was scheduled on that day of the week! And as if this were not sufficient, on the eve of departure, rabbis came to recite a prayer on board — which constitutes a carte blanche given to the ship's owners, even though according to all opinions this involves Shabbos* desecration according to Torah* standards. After all this, what place can your concern have — that this would constitute a lack of respect for someone?
I must say, after all this, that I do not know whether I would have intervened in this matter had the actual conduct been different from what is observed. However, the voyages of these ships also compromise Shabbos* observance here, and even without this problem, observance was not satisfactory. This question has therefore become one for the city of New York and its inhabitants as well. Moreover, as I already wrote to you some time ago, for those few people who fear Hashem, there is no problem here, since the rabbis of the Holy Land adopt the attitude described in the press clipping I enclose. And other reasons are invoked as well.
Concerning the jubilee book (note: published on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Rav Reuven Katz, Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikva and father-in-law of Rav Harkavy) that you wish to publish with my letter about the ships, I enclose a copy of another letter. If these letters are printed as they stand, without softening them, you may of course have them published wherever you wish, although I told you in my previous letters that, for various reasons, it is not customary in the house of the Rebbe to participate in such jubilee books. In this case, however, it concerns the jubilee of your father-in-law, the eminent Rav, to whom I have also addressed this question (note: see also letter no. 4709).
You make reference to the book about Yekatrinoslav* (note: the city in Russia from which the Rebbe originates and where his father served as Rav). Contact is currently being sought with those who originate from there. When concrete results are obtained, they will certainly be communicated to you. I send greetings to the members of your family, and may Hashem grant that you give me good news in these domains — in particular concerning the ships.
With my blessing to give good news of all this,
I enclose a copy of the remarks I made to the children of the summer camp Gan Yisrael* (note: see Likkutei Sichos vol. 2, p. 593, and letters no. 5629, 5638, 5649, 5695), under the direction of Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*. As its opening indicates, I allude here to all Jewish children, in particular to those whose names I mention — which, of course, also includes your son Yehuda Leib.
