Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of 16 Tammuz*. May Hashem, Who guards His people Israel, Who extends His Providence to each individual, Who is the Essence of Good, protect you physically and morally, wherever you may be (note: this letter is addressed to a soldier).

Since none of us knows what is truly transpiring, you must consider that you have been sent into the environment in which you currently find yourself in order to strengthen and spread Judaism there in general, and Chassidus*, its customs and practices, in particular. Every effort, every intervention in this direction is justified, given the greatness and importance of what is at stake. For if one must adopt this same attitude in every milieu in which one finds oneself, how much more so in a place of which it has been specifically stated: "Your camp shall be holy." As I said, who knows what is really happening? When you have successfully carried out this mission, perhaps you will be brought back to your previous environment, in good order, with kindness and in peace.

You have surely read the accounts of the talks commenting on the saying of the Baal Shem Tov* that from everything one can learn a lesson for the service of Hashem. When one finds oneself in a context where the rule is obedience and submission, one must constantly remember, without cease, that "the beginning of the service of Hashem, its essential aspect, and its source" (note: according to the terms of chapter 41 of the Tanya*) is the acceptance of the yoke of Divine sovereignty. This is self-evident.

You have surely organized a Chassidic* farbrengen* for the Festival of Liberation (note: of the Frierdiker Rebbe* from Soviet imprisonment, 12 Tammuz*). May Hashem grant that you maintain the motivation and joy throughout the entire year.

במענה על מכתבו מט"ז תמוז.

יהי רצון מהשי"ת השומר את עמו ישראל ומשגיח על כל אחד ואחד בהשגחה פרטית, שהוא עצם הטוב, שישמרהו הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות בכל מקום בו נמצא.

וכיון שאין אתנו יודע עד מה, עליו להביט על עצמו שנשלח להסביבה שנמצא בה עכשו כדי לחזק ולהפיץ שם יהדות בכלל ותורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי' ביחוד. וכל יגיעה והשתדלות בזה כדאית היא - לערך גודל הענין וחשיבותו. שאם בכל מקום בו נמצאים יש לעשות כן, על אחת כמה וכמה בסביבה עלי' נתוסף צווי מיוחד והי' מחנך קדוש. וכנ"ל אין אתנו יודע עד מה ואפשר שכשימלא שליחותו זו יחזירוהו לסביבתו הקודמת בסדר בחסד ובשלום.

בטח קרא רשימות השיחות מיוסדות על פתגם הבעש"ט שמכל ענין צריך האדם ללמוד הוראה בעבודה להשי"ת, וכשנמצאים בסביבה המיוסדת על ענין של משמעת וקבלת עול, הרי זוהי הזכרה תמידית ובלתי פוסקת אשר ראשית העבודה ועקרה ושרשה הוא ענין דקבלת עול מלכות שמים וק"ל.

בטח ערך התועדות בימי הגאולה ויהי רצון שימשיך ההתעוררות והשמחה על כל השנה כולה.
