Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5621 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 15 · Letter 298 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
Rosh Chodesh* Menachem Av* 5717,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the eminent Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen (note: Rav E. E. Yales, of Philadelphia; see also letter no. 5491),
Greetings and blessings,
I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter of the day on which the word "good" was said twice (note: Tuesday, the third day of Creation) of Parshas Massei*, with its contents. I have good hope that upon receiving this letter, you will no longer be suffering from your foot. May Hashem grant that you give me good news of everything connected to this, as well as of the moral dimension of things.
Indeed, the foot, in the spiritual domain, corresponds to faith (note: see also letter no. 3842). For, "Moshe* received six hundred and thirteen mitzvos* on Mount Sinai, and Chabakuk* expressed them in a single principle, as it is stated: 'The righteous lives by his faith.'" Various texts explain all of this, in particular the Gate of Faith by the Mitteler Rebbe*. And this date (note: Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av) is connected to this idea, since it is the Hilula* of Aharon* the High Priest.
I send you my blessing that we may merit, together with all of Israel — through the events of these days brought about by the Av (note: "Av" means "Father," who destroyed the Temple; it is the second part of the name of this month) — to witness very soon the transformation of these days, the revelation of the luminous Countenance, filled with evident love, permeated with Chassidus*, and the coming of the Menachem (note: "Menachem" means "Consoler," the first part of the name of this month). Then it will be said: "I will thank You, Hashem, for You have chastised me... and You will console me" — with a double consolation.
You should consult chapter 22 of Igeres HaKodesh* by the Alter Rebbe*, at the paragraph beginning with "just as." And you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, repeating what the Alter Rebbe* said — that in citing this image of a father, he did not mention the title of Chassid*, although the Chassid* is merciful, wise, and righteous. Indeed, this is truly a case of chastisement. This is self-evident.
