Igrot Kodesh · Letter 561 — Cleaving to the Rebbe Through His Torah After His Passing

Volume 3 · Letter 160

By the grace of Hashem,

Rosh Chodesh* Adar 5710,

Brooklyn, New York,

You know what Iggeret HaKodesh* says in chapter 27: 'To console doubly those who are stricken, wounded, and grieved' because 'the Tzaddik* departed from this world, leaving life to all those who were bound to him... each one according to his sincere attachment, his true and pure love.'

The book explaining the importance of visiting the tomb of the Tzaddik* clarifies that 'those who have not known him and have not seen him, but have only studied the works he left behind, received the light of his teaching, and in this way strengthened themselves in their service of Hashem, can certainly be considered his disciples. They have faith in this Tzaddik* and benefit from the clarity of his teaching. The leaves of the tree are likewise bound to its roots.'

My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explains in a letter that 'a deep desire to cleave to one's master can only be satisfied by studying the Chassidic* discourses that he delivers and writes. For seeing his face does not suffice.'

In a second letter, he specifies that 'one who wonders how he can cleave to me, given that I do not know him personally, should know that he can do so sincerely through Torah* study. If he studies my discourses, reads my farbrengens*, befriends my friends — the Chassidim* and students of the Yeshiva* — participates in their studies and gatherings, fulfills my request to recite Tehillim*[3], respects the time set for study, he will truly be attached to me.'

By studying his teachings and farbrengens*, by following the path he charted for us, we will stir his spirit within us, and in this material world — where only action counts — he will be even more present. And he will continue to fulfill his mission, as he did until now.
