By the grace of Hashem,
11 Tammuz* 5717,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
You know the explanation that the Baal Shem Tov* gives of the verse: "A psalm for thanksgiving, when he (note: King David) was in the wilderness of Judah" — which states: "May it be that I observe You thus in holiness" (note: may my thirst for the Divine in the realm of holiness be as intense as that which arises from the awareness of lack). Similarly, when you were there, in our country (note: in Russia), the observance of Torah* and mitzvos* required the giving of one's very person, in the most literal sense. Despite this, everyone displayed self-sacrifice and great and magnificent accomplishments were achieved. Now, the Baal Shem Tov* says, "May it be that I observe You in holiness" precisely because, in the natural order, this is not the case.
Yet what a distance there should be between the former situation and the one that prevails in a place where a Jew, particularly a Chassid*, receives the opportunity to spread the wellsprings (note: of Chassidus*), as I told you when we met — and moreover to do so among hundreds, thousands of our brethren, the children of Israel! Yet it appears that despite this, the reduction in motivation and enthusiasm is not even proportional. Nevertheless, as Igeres HaKodesh* explains in chapter 25, I am surprised to see that the students must endure such a situation.
We are on the eve of the Festival of Liberation (note: of the Frierdiker Rebbe* from Soviet imprisonment), when miracles transcending nature were observed, even with eyes of flesh. May Hashem therefore grant that these days be commemorated in the manner that is fitting, and that their effect be revealed once more here below, in a concrete manner. Thus, without seeking pretexts and excuses, one will become conscious of one's true mission — which consists of drawing thousands, tens of thousands of Jews toward the teaching of Chassidus*, its customs, and its practices.
With my blessing to give good news of all this,
ה'תרא
