Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5600 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 15 · Letter 277
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Tammuz* 5717,
Brooklyn,
To Mr. Yitzchak (note: presumably Mr. I. Damyel; see also letter no. 5471),
Greetings and blessings,
Since your last letter of Isru Chag* of the time of the giving of our Torah* (note: the day after Shavuos*), I have received no other. I wish to hope that this is a sign that you are continuing your work of drawing the hearts of the children of Israel closer to our Father Who is in Heaven, in every place where your influence extends. And we have been given the assurance that one who truly takes on such a mission will know success — even though what must be accomplished is not identical for everyone, in every place and at every moment, nor is the time when one reaps the fruits of such activity. It is human nature that when one knows from the outset that an endeavor will be fruitful, one undertakes it with greater eagerness and joy. The success is increased accordingly.
I have chosen to write all of this to you on the eve of the days of liberation (note: of the Frierdiker Rebbe* from Soviet imprisonment), the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*. Indeed, you are surely familiar with the account of the imprisonment and the deliverance, and I therefore hope that the date of this letter will inspire you to meditate on the reason for the imprisonment, the liberation, and the manner in which it unfolded. Above all, you will reflect on the purpose, the intention for which these details have reached you. Indeed, nothing is useless in the world, and everything is the effect of Divine Providence*. This date thus evokes the saying that "the wise person is content with a hint." For an imprisonment is more difficult when it is brought about by friends and acquaintances, when it does not involve the wearing of chains (note: in such a case, it is not easy to recognize that it constitutes an imprisonment). One must sometimes give of oneself entirely to free oneself from such an imprisonment. Moreover, Chassidus* specifies the meaning of this self-sacrifice, mesiras nefesh*, which it connects to the verse: "My will (nafshi*) does not go toward this people" (note: in this sense, self-sacrifice means giving over one's own will).
I send you my blessing to give good news of all this. I hope you will do so in better health, after the attack that unfortunately struck you, as you mention at the end of your letter. You will preserve the effect of the Festival of Liberation throughout the entire year, with joy and enthusiasm.
M. Schneerson,
P.S.: In one of your previous letters, you tell me that you wonder about the fact that the source of impure animals is the three entirely impure forces of evil. Why should they be disadvantaged to the point that elevation is denied to them (note: see also letter no. 5027)?
Several points must be raised in this regard, and the most important is the following. Everything has its reason for being in the world — that is, a way of ascending toward its primal source, to the most elevated level. Thus, pure animals receive this elevation when they are consumed, for example. For impure animals, on the other hand, one must refrain from consuming them, since that is the injunction of the Torah*. One can therefore make use of them for a purpose other than food and drink. Thus, a donkey can carry a burden. Of course, these animals also possess a spark of Divinity, for "there is nothing besides Him" and "You give life to all." In such a case, this spark receives its elevation and unites with its source through the mitzvah*, in the two ways just defined (note: by refraining from consumption or by putting them to useful work). You will also see the holy Zohar*, volume 2, page 163a, cited by the Tanya* at the end of chapter 29, according to which the tempter himself is rewarded (note: for by overcoming this temptation, one ensures the elevation of the forbidden object). You should also consult the Chassidic* discourse entitled "After Hashem," by the Tzemach Tzedek*, which is printed at the end of Derech Mitzvosecha*.
You also make reference to free will. Now, truly free choice is reserved for the children of Israel, who are an integral part of the Essence of Hashem. For Hashem alone transcends entirely all barriers and all limitations. You should also consult Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Emor*, page 38b. This is also explained in the Chassidic* discourses of the Rebbe Rashab*, based on the verse "He shall choose for us our heritage" (note: see Sefer HaMaamarim* 5692-5696, in the discourse "And Hashem said," page 69), which have not yet been published.
