Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5597 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 15 · Letter 274

By the grace of Hashem,

10 Tammuz* 5717,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter, which opens by recalling the teaching that "when one shoots an arrow into the air, it falls back on its point." You briefly describe your life and tell me what you are doing now — in particular, your effort to spread the study of the Tanya*.

This teaching of our Sages*, with which you introduce your letter, also emphasizes that it is not necessary to shoot multiple times, since the first suffices for landing on the point. One can deduce from this, regarding our subject, that you need not seek to be "shot" once more, not even with kindness and mercy. Indeed, "HaKadosh Baruch Hu* created nothing useless in His world." You have already landed on the point and must now continue in this direction. This is what is expected of you, and you therefore have the strength and the means to put all of this into practice.

Even a brief reflection on your source and your origins will lead you not to be content with your present situation. You will do everything in your power to elevate yourself, from one level to the next. Of course, you will do the same in your efforts to influence others, in accordance with the teaching of the Alter Rebbe* (note: see also letter no. 4890) that the injunction "You shall love your fellow as yourself" is the vessel for another injunction with which it is unified: "You shall love Hashem your Elokim*" — the essential and fundamental mitzvah* governing the relationship between man and Hashem.

As you know, love is the source of the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments, according to the explanation of the Tanya* in chapter 4. Among these commandments, fear is also included — the source of the three hundred and sixty-five prohibitions. It follows that love is indeed at the foundation of all the mitzvos*.

These days are propitious for making additional resolutions in this regard, since the 12th and 13th of Tammuz* mark the liberation of our master, who was imprisoned because he gave of himself entirely in order to spread Torah* and mitzvos* among the children of Israel. Each year at this time, these events resurge — the liberation from prison, the removal of imprisonment — through the power of self-sacrifice on the part of every Jew for the Torah* and its mitzvos*.

May Hashem grant that you find the right words to explain and illuminate this message, to spread it among the young people wherever your influence extends.

With my blessing to give good news and to celebrate the Festival of Liberation with success,

P.S.: You ask me about the manner in which you have led the young people around you to study the Tanya*. You have achieved good results in this way, and there is therefore no reason to heed the concerns prompted by apprehension — that they might stumble because of the questions and answers (note: which could be misinterpreted and suggest wrong ideas). With proper thought and attention, you can certainly formulate the questions in a way that eliminates this risk entirely. Moreover, you know the saying that "the Torah* was not given to angels" (note: failure is therefore possible). After stumbling, one retains the words of Torah* (note: enabling one to repair the failure), and everything depends only on the will. The merit of the public protects you.
