To Mr. Avraham (note: Mr. A. Banai, of Tel Aviv),

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of 18 Sivan*, in which you tell me that several young women in your neighborhood are requesting a place to pray. Indeed, there is no women's section in your synagogue.

It is clear that their request is legitimate. In our days especially, a women's section in the synagogue or near it will encourage them to follow the paths of Judaism, to observe the mitzvos* of Hashem, to establish Jewish homes founded on Torah* and mitzvos*. All of this is therefore indispensable. You will surely find a suitable place at little cost. Indeed, in a women's section there is no Holy Ark, no bimah*. They need only be able to gather and pray together. It would also be good to teach them the commonly applicable laws. If no other option is available, at least initially, they may gather after the men's prayer in the current synagogue (note: that is, pray on their own after the conclusion of the men's service).

You surely know the three studies that apply to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These concern the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* and are well known. At least adopt them in the future.

א) כמה בנות משיכון שלהם דורשות מקום להתפלל, כי בבית הכנסת שלהם אין עזרת נשים.

מובן שצודקות הן בדרישתן זו ובפרט בימינו אשר עזרת נשים בבית הכנסת או בסמיכות לו תחזק אותן ללכת בדרכי היהדות ולשמור מצותיו ית' ולהעמיד בתים בישראל על יסודי התורה והמצוה, ומובן הכרח הדבר, ובודאי יש למצוא מקום מתאים מבלי הוצאות יתירות, שהרי בעזרת נשים אין צורך לבנין ארון קדש בימה וכו' ורק שיהי' מקום שתתאספנה ותתפללנה ביחד, ומה טוב שגם ילמדו לפניהן הדינים הצריכות להן, ובאם אי אפשר אחרת עכ"פ בזמן הראשון, הרי אפשר שתתאספנה לאחרי זמן תפלת האנשים בבית הכנסת שישנו עתה...

בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר
