Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5582 — Tzedakah
Volume 15 · Letter 259 · To: sens le plus simple
By the grace of Hashem*,
6 Tammuz* 5717,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 28 Sivan*, in which you communicate the reasons and elements that led to the reduction and perhaps even the cessation of your activities in a certain domain.
I have already written to several Chassidim* that each person receives a specific mission in the world of the Holy One, blessed be He, but the common thread of all these missions is the affirmation of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator" — that is, the service of Hashem*. In the most basic sense, when the praises of Hashem* were to be pronounced in the Beis HaMikdash* (Temple), the one who participated in the choir and the doorkeeper did not have the same function. Yet neither could neglect his work to perform that of the other. Now, it is the same for the service of Hashem* by the Jewish people. All share a collective responsibility. Despite this, it is said that "the poor of your city take precedence over those of another city" and that a mitzvah* that cannot be accomplished by someone else supersedes all other considerations. How much more so is it not incumbent upon Jews to assume the service of Hashem* that belongs to the angels.
Consequently, the search for the reward and punishment due to others, the determination of who is guilty and who is right — including regarding oneself — are merely forms of the service of Hashem* belonging to the angels, who are charged with evaluating the merits of men (note: and to whom it therefore belongs to tally good and bad deeds). A person, on the other hand, will put into practice the injunction: "We are workers of the day" (note: see letter no. 5471), acting in a concrete and positive manner. To say that one is constrained in one domain, must remain passive in another — even if this is the truth and not the application of the verse "Self-love covers all faults" — does not allow one to consider that what needed to be done has been achieved. In such a case, the essential mission has not been carried out. Yet such is the content of your letter.
I do not wish to say more, so self-evident is this. Moreover, it is unnecessary to complain about the past. And you affirm that in the future, you will continue the good deeds. Now, there is no good but the Torah*, which is moreover permeated with the light emanating from the Tree of Life*, which knows no mixture of good and evil, and contains only the purest good.
May Hashem* grant that you increasingly multiply these actions, that you advance in this matter from one level to the next, which will enable you to do the same in your personal concerns. I await good news, especially since we are approaching the days of the liberation (note: of the Frierdiker Rebbe from Soviet imprisonment), 12 and 13 Tammuz*, which are favorable — the days that follow them and those that precede them — when evidently, the victory in everything concerning Torah* and mitzvos* transcended all the ways of nature.
With my blessing,
