Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5579 — Tzedakah

Volume 15 · Letter 256 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem*,

5 Tammuz* 5717,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Yitzchak (note: Mr. Y. Weil of Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu; see also letter no. 4862),

I greet you and bless you,

After a long interruption, I received your letter of 27 Sivan*. You ask me:

A) Does one recite a blessing for an eclipse of the moon or the sun?

According to an established principle stated by the Beis Yosef*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 46, one does not introduce a new blessing that does not appear in the Talmud*. In this case, one does not say a blessing because the eclipse is a sign that a misfortune is approaching, according to Tractate Sukkah* 29a. On the contrary, one must pray to avert it, implore divine mercy, and not recite a blessing.

B) Were the Sages aware of these eclipses (note: see Likutei Sichos*, vol. 15, p. 8), and are they natural phenomena?

The eclipse of planets is mentioned in various texts of our Sages, and I am surprised that you have a doubt about this. You know, indeed, that the scholars of Egypt and, before them, those of Babylon, compiled lists of these eclipses, and history books show that the Sages of Israel were in contact with these scholars. The sacred books say so as well.

The existence of these lists proves that it is indeed a natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, it provides an indication, just as the rainbow, which is also a natural occurrence, but serves in addition as a sign, as is explained at length elsewhere. There is no contradiction in this. Indeed, when can an eclipse of the sun or the moon be interpreted in the manner indicated in Tractate Sukkah* 29a? When the eclipses are visible on earth and can be observed by those who know their meaning. This is not the case, for example, if the skies are covered with clouds (note: see Likutei Sichos, vol. 15, p. 9). In such a case, there is no indication, no lesson for the person on earth. The same applies to the rainbow, as the commentators on the Torah* state.

C) What difference is there between those who have adopted Chassidus* and those who have not? Do they observe the world in the same way?

It is clear that this is indeed the case, and concrete experience establishes it. All of this would be too lengthy to explain in a letter, especially since these elements can be found in various books specifying what Chassidus* is and what concerns it. You will also see the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit* protects us.

D) You ask me about summaries of the Tanya*.

You will no doubt find them first in the "Summaries and Notes on the Tanya" of the Tzemach Tzedek*. Of course, this does not preclude summaries and notes that you may compose personally, so that it will be easier for you to memorize the text and review it at a propitious moment.

E) How should you study Torah* for yourself and disseminate Judaism* according to your means?

It seems to me that I have already written to you that there is no contradiction between these and personal study. On the contrary, to convince others, one must first study oneself. Nevertheless, you will divide your time between these two studies. In general, regarding the two activities of effort toward oneself and effort toward others, not everyone is the same. A person is close to himself and is therefore not objective about what concerns him. This is why he needs to take counsel with someone who can analyze the situation in a disinterested manner.

F) You say that the kibbutz* way of life and the daily schedule do not permit activities to strengthen Judaism*.

As I have said, this depends on the character traits of each individual. There is no inherent opposition between the kibbutz* way of life — provided, of course, that it is based on Torah*, mitzvos* and the mission entrusted to the Jewish person here below. And the Mishnah* states: "I was created to serve my Creator."

Although you do not indicate it clearly, I hope that you maintain the three studies that apply to everyone, established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit* protects us. These concern the Chumash*, Tehillim* and Tanya* and are well known. These are in addition to the time you set aside to study the revealed dimension of Torah* and Chassidus*.

You will surely participate in the celebration of the liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, which is approaching. Moreover, this year marks the thirtieth anniversary of this liberation, as was indicated in the talk of the Shabbos* that blesses the month of Tammuz*, defining the importance and content of a thirty-year period.

With my blessing,
