Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5572 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 15 · Letter 249

By the grace of Hashem*,

3 Tammuz* 5717,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 26 Sivan*, in which you speak of your future brother-in-law and what he told you regarding the study of Chassidus* and its practices. He himself devotes himself to this in a discreet manner (note: without anyone knowing).

In previous generations, one could indeed conceive of such an attitude, especially since one did not wish to derive pride from it (note: from fulfilling mitzvos in a more elevated manner, according to the practice of Chassidus). In our era, however, even though one must of course reject ostentation, one can nevertheless observe that an affirmed conduct in this matter creates a deeper bond and attachment (note: to Chassidus). Indeed, it is then established that one belongs to this milieu, that one has adopted its practices, that it is not proper to suddenly change one's mind. A person must do everything in his power not to be confronted with temptation or, in any event, to reduce it to the fullest extent possible. An affirmed Chassidic* conduct is indeed a means of reducing temptation (note: which would, in this case, be a departure from Chassidus). This is self-evident.

I hope that each of you, and all of you together, will take advantage of the days of the liberation (note: of the Frierdiker Rebbe from Soviet imprisonment), 12 and 13 Tammuz*, which are approaching, to the fullest extent possible, in order to strengthen the study of Torah*, the practice of mitzvos* in general, and to disseminate the wellsprings* (note: of Chassidus) in particular. I await good news in this matter.

At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit* protects us, for the satisfaction of each one's needs. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of this as well.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,

E. Kwint,
