Volume 15 · Letter 248

By the grace of Hashem*,

3 Tammuz* 5717,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Menachem Zeev HaLevi (note: Rav M.Z. Gringlass of Montreal; see also letter no. 5415),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 26 Sivan* and you have surely received my response to your previous correspondence long ago.

You envisage the writing of evaluations (note: Rav Gringlass had asked the Rebbe to write them) on the students' notebooks. It seems that you overlook the fact that doing so requires disengaging from other activities, devoting oneself to this task, and then, after writing these evaluations, setting them aside in order to resume the other matters on the agenda. Indeed, upon reading your letter, one might think that for a one-line evaluation, all that is needed is the time it takes to read it and, at most, a moment before and after.

If this were the customary arrangement, if these evaluations were expected from me, it would have been necessary to find time for them. But to someone like you, I hope it is unnecessary to explain at length that the responsibility for this lies with the Yeshivah* attended by these students. Moreover, even if I needed to see them and formulate remarks on various points, the evaluations addressed to the students should nonetheless be made in the name of the administration or emanate from it. This is how every school should practice. Furthermore, there is even a question in this matter, for more precisely, these are students who are Chassidic* by nature, but due to the presence of the evil inclination* (note: toward evil) in the human heart, they must make a great effort, or at least a considerable effort.

Of course, this does not mean that I will never write an evaluation. I merely wish to underscore what is, in any case, self-evident — that this is not a standard pedagogical practice, even within the Yeshivos* of Tomchei Temimim*. I have never heard that this was done in previous years. If the time is right and if it is important, we will see what should be done.

With my blessing,

M. Schneerson,
