Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5569 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 15 · Letter 246
By the grace of Hashem*,
2 Tammuz* 5717,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 28 Sivan*, in which you tell me that concrete preparations are being made (note: to wage a counter-offensive in matters of public concern — for example, regarding Israeli ships sailing on Shabbos, as the Rebbe will discuss below).
Without doubt, whoever can intervene to eliminate this dreadful situation is indeed introducing all appropriate measures and will continue to do so. For who knows and how can one determine the most propitious moment for such actions? It is surely unnecessary to counsel eagerness to someone like you, and the purpose of the present letter is only to emphasize all of this, in accordance with the statement of our Sages that "one counsels eagerness only to those who naturally possess this quality."
Another point: the verse states that "your destroyers and those who lay you waste emanate from you." In a more subtle sense, this means that when those who fear the Word of Hashem* exhibit their weakness in one of the domains of faith, even in the most minimal way, the grip of the "other side" becomes possible and it can wage an offensive war on various points. There is nothing supernatural in this. It is natural that it be so, and moreover, many secularists say it plainly: "Since they yielded in such-and-such a domain, why would they not do so in another as well?" Sometimes, even the reverse is true (note: one compromise invites another).
I specifically allude to the Israeli ships (note: see letter no. 5534) that travel during the holy Shabbos*, and due to our many transgressions, many are those who fear the Word of Hashem* and yet stumble in this matter. Indeed, the absolute prohibition in this domain is passed over in silence, deliberately or not. Moreover, some give this transgression — punishable by stoning (note: desecration of Shabbos according to Torah law) — the appearance of a mitzvah*, making it a case of force majeure (note: which would permit Shabbos desecration, for instance due to danger). The darkness of exile is deep, and one relies on reasons that are merely pretexts, suggested by a person exerting pressure. It is thus that one stumbles.
Another point concerns the present era. It is the separation that must be maintained in schools between boys and girls (note: see letter no. 5212). The lacunae in this matter have unfortunately caused many casualties until now. I raised this question with bitterness, and I was answered, without ulterior motive, that there are in the Holy Land* many Rabbanim*, many great Torah* scholars, and that obviously, these would not have remained idle if this problem truly existed.
In these two domains, it is certain that if the necessary effort were made, the situation would improve. Now, one who saves a single Jewish soul is considered as if he had sustained the entire world. How much more so when it concerns hundreds and thousands of people.
There is also a third point that, it seems, will be more difficult to resolve. It is the military service of women. Discussing this subject with someone, I expressed my surprise and astonishment at discovering that the essential aspect had not been raised. This mixing of the sexes is forbidden for the men as well. Yet reference is made only to a subsequent point concerning the women. The statement of our Sages is cited, according to which "Esther became like the ground of the world" (note: when she had contact with Achashverosh). In practice, women who are not religious are an obstacle far more than those who are (note: a greater precaution is therefore necessary in this matter).
I say that a question arises here, for according to the latest information that has reached me, it would be possible to intervene in this matter. Granted, in an official and declared manner, they will not agree to eliminate women's military service, but unofficially, this would be possible. Everyone, including the opposing camp, has realized that the resulting harm is not considerable compared to the negative situation that ensues — according to the opinion of all, and not only in the religious domain.
Granted, the winter months are better suited than the present period for exerting pressure and achieving success. But one does not complain about the past. May Hashem* grant that at least now, those who fear the Word of Hashem* make use of all the means and possibilities at their disposal. Every effort in this matter is a mitzvah*, especially since there are good chances of achieving success, to a certain degree, in all three domains that have just been discussed. And if one considers the importance of what is at stake, every effort in this matter is truly justified.
With my respects, my blessing, and in anticipation of your good news,
