Igrot Kodesh · Letter 555 — Educating Immigrant Children in the Holy Land

To the distinguished Chassid*, who fears Hashem,

Rav M.[1],

I greet and bless you,

I reply to your letter addressing the problem of educating the children of those who are currently immigrating to the Holy Land. This matter has been under examination for several months[2]. Meetings have been held in the presence of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, to determine what should be the intervention of the Chabad* Chassidim association in this regard.

In my humble opinion, to answer your question, here is the list of our needs in this area: buildings, educators, directors, and above all a person who would take responsibility for this activity, and funds to cover expenses.

If one wishes this enterprise to be lasting, it must, at the outset, remain modest in scale — that is, limited to several dozen children. Subsequently, one will see how to develop and expand.

Nevertheless, the needs defined above are necessary from the very beginning, and the question that therefore arises is as follows. Is there among you someone who can undertake this task and wishes to take responsibility for it? He will of course receive a salary, of a moderate amount. Do you have good educators? Do you have a building ready for this purpose?

If that is the case, we will find here the funds necessary for the first weeks, because, based on the discussions we have been able to have with communal leaders of the Holy Land, it is clear that the Department for the Aliyah* of youth will be able to provide a lump-sum subsidy per child, if a school with a proper Torah* atmosphere is established there.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו בענין חינוך הילדים העולים עתה לאה"ק ת"ו, הנה יושבים על מדוכה זו כאן כמה חדשים, היו אסיפות אצל כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א וכו' וכו' ובנוגע לפעולות אגו"ח בזה, מה שנלפע"ד - בכלל נצרכים לפתרון שאלה הנ"ל: בתים, מדריכים ומנהלים (ובעיקר איש שיהי' אחראי לכל מפעל זה), ממון להוצאות.

והנה, כמו בכל ענין שהכוונה בו שיהי' בר קיימא, מהנכון להתחיל בזעיר אנפין, היינו איזה עשיריות ילדים וילדות, ובמשך העבודה עצמה יראו באיזה אופן יש להרחיב ולהגדיל.

אבל גם להתחלה כזו דרושים כהנ"ל. והשאלה היא: היש אצלם איש המתאים וגם רוצה להתעסק באחריות בכל הנ"ל (כמובן ע"מ לקבל פרס ע"ד המיצוע), היש אצלם מדריכים מתאימים, היש ברשותם בית מוכן או כזה הדורש רק שיפור ותקונים קטנים.

ואז נמציא את ההוצאות הדרושות לשבועות הראשונים מכאן, ומדגיש אני "הראשונים", כי ע"פ השיחות שהיו פה עם כמה מהעסקנים האחראים בא"י - הנה מוסד חינוך אשר מנהליו יהיו כדבעי למיהוי, ברור אשר מחלקת עלית הנוער וכיו"ב יתנו ע"ח כל ילד וילדה תמיכתם הקצובה וקרוב לודאי שיקציבו סכום לבדק הבית. ומובן שהתחלה הנ"ל צריכה להעשות עם ילדים מגיל המתאים לתכנית עלית הנוער, הנמצאים במחנות המעבר.

ע"ד גודל ערך העבודה הנ"ל בכלל, וגודל התפארת שאפשר להיות בזה לאגו"ח האריכות אך למותר וכן אין ספק, אשר זהו כר נרחב להתפשטות ולתועליות בלתי צפויות מראש,

אם רק תתנהל העבודה ע"י איש מתאים ומסור לזה.

הצעתו שיתחילו מאה"ק בעריכת מגבית לצורך עבודה הנ"ל, שיקבלו מכתבים מהרבנות הראשית וכו' - הנה מלבד שזהו בכלל דרך ארוכה וארוכה, הרי התנאים לעשית מגביות הולכים וכבדים ביותר מיום ליום, אפילו המגביות המיוסדות מאז ומקדם הורע מצבם ומתאבקים על קיומם, התחלת עריכת מגבית שוללת האפשריות לקבלת תמיכה ממוסדות. ועוד, והוא העיקר: מי הוא מאנ"ש מסוגל ומנוסה בענין אוסף ממון?!
