Greetings and blessings,
I duly received your letter of this Monday, in which you make reference to the role of the Yeshiva* Tomchei Temimim*. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to specify that the prohibition against hearing the arguments of only one party is not an unreasoned decree of the Torah, but rather a logical attitude. It is clear that in this matter, rationality must prevail — all the more so since there are here two essential ideas, which are the following:
A) There are meetings of the administration of the Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim. As your letter indicates, in those where the points you raise were debated, you were present and could therefore have formulated the remarks you are now conveying to me. Even if one can imagine that, at the time, you did not foresee the difficulties that would follow, it is nonetheless logical to consider that "the mouth that forbade can be the one that permits." Indeed, it always remains possible to return to these points at subsequent meetings, to debate them in the presence of all members of the administration. And it is equally logical to say that "salvation comes through many counselors" (Mishlei 11:14), especially regarding such questions.
B) The following point is essential, not only with regard to the content of your letter, but also given what the other members of the Tomchei Temimim administration write. It is quite evident that the purpose of a Yeshiva — its fundamental reason for being — is the welfare of its students. The teachers, the dean, and the leaders are merely intermediaries, enabling the students to concretely receive this benefit. Consequently, every difficulty regarding the Yeshiva must systematically be analyzed in the context of its primary purpose — that is, the welfare of the students and what follows from it.
It follows that the teacher and the dean must concentrate their efforts in this area, setting their personal concerns aside for the welfare of the students. It is only to this extent that they faithfully discharge the mission entrusted to them. Moreover, it is in this way that they themselves will acquire greatness, for a teacher and a dean grow in stature when the Yeshiva does likewise. If it develops quantitatively and qualitatively, if the students' interests are fully served, the importance and value of the teacher and the dean are strengthened — not spiritually as a reward, but materially, through a cause-and-effect relationship, in a natural manner.
It is quite evident that these words are addressed to all — to the teachers, the dean, and the leaders — as my time does not allow me to address each one personally. You therefore have the authorization and the merit to make my point of view known in this debate that has arisen among you, to use a euphemism. May Hashem grant that your words come from the heart. In this way, they will enter the heart of the listener and act upon it. Indeed, the Rebbe Rashab* would write the following request for a blessing when he delivered his Chassidic discourses: "May this have an effect upon me and upon those who hear it." This is self-evident.
With my blessing for success in your sacred mission of training students who will rightfully bear their name — Temimim, those who are whole — with true breadth of spirit,
