Igrot Kodesh · Letter 553 — Founding of Beit Rivka Girls School

By the grace of Hashem,

29 Kislev 5710,

To Mrs. H. D. Goldshmitt-Gour Aryeh[1],

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 18 Kislev, informing me that you have founded a Beit Rivka* and hope to establish a nursery as well. I thank you for this.

I was moved by the fact that you have finally decided to 'guard my father's vineyard'[2]. In the era of the First Temple, when the Jewish people were 'each man under his vine and each man under his fig tree'[3], there was already concern that 'I was charged with guarding the vineyards' and that as a result, 'I could not guard my own vineyard.'

How much more must this be so in the present era, when minds are disturbed in a frightening manner, when darkness is made to pass for light. One must therefore be even more clearly mindful that 'I could not guard my own vineyard.'

This applies especially to those who are capable of undertaking such a mission and are in any case occupied with guarding the vineyards.

בת"ח נתקבל מכתבה מיום ח"י כסלו עם הידיעות ע"ד יסוד בית רבקה והתקוה לפתיחת גן ילדים בקרוב.

ונהניתי ג"כ מה שסוף סוף שמה לבה להתחיל בנטירת כרם בית אבי ואם בזמן שבית המקדש ראשון קיים ובנ"י איש תחת גפנו ואיש תחת תאנתו כבר דאגו ע"ז ששמוני נוטרה את הכרמים ובמילא כרמי שלי לא נטרתי על אחת כמה וכמה בזמננו עתה שמבלבלים המוחות באופן היותר מבהיל ושמים חושך לאור וכו' שהטענה והדאגה כרמי שלי לא נטרתי גדלה ביותר ובפרט לאלו המסוגלים וגם עוסקים בנטירת כרמים.
