Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me how to escape from unfortunate occurrences.

As you know, one must first forget everything that has happened, and not even think about making amends. On this subject, consult the Responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Gate of Additives, chapter 62. Various passages of the Talmud explain what this forgetting must consist of. One must not struggle against it, which would go counter to the forgetting; rather, one should concentrate on another idea, for thought functions constantly and one can forget an idea only by meditating on another. Better still, let that other idea belong to the light of the Torah. For a little light dispels much darkness.

The help of Hashem is systematically necessary. To obtain it, you surely observe the ritual immersion (tevilah*) instituted by Ezra. Additionally, it would be good, every weekday after the morning prayer, to give a few coins to tzedakah*. Indeed, our Sages say: "Rabbi Elazar would give a coin to a poor person and then pray" (Bava Basra 10a). You will observe the three daily studies that apply to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us — pertaining to the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, which are well known. They are beneficial practices in various domains.

Of course, you will adopt all of this without making a vow, in accordance with current Jewish custom, and as can be inferred from the Likkutei Torah* on Parshas Mattos, in the commentary on the vow, and from the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Tzemach Tzedek, on the mitzvah of vows.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita,

The secretary,
