Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Iyar, in which you inform me of the match being proposed for your son.

It is quite evident that the sheitel* (wig) is a sine qua non (note: for this proposal to be considered; see letter no. 5333). It is clear that one cannot compare elderly women or those who came from the previous country (note: Russia, where women wore a kerchief rather than a wig) to a young couple now building a Jewish home in Kfar Chabad*, a village founded and directed by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. And here it is not merely a personal concern, but a public matter (note: because of the example being set), affecting the greatest number and conferring merit upon them.

On the other hand, I am not saying that the subject should be raised with vehemence and anger, in the form of a command and demand. Only the concrete action matters, and therefore an assurance (note: to wear the wig) must be given before the marriage. From the way you describe the character of this young girl and her acceptance of the discipline of the Bais Yaakov* school, it seems that she fully defers to the opinion of her director, and he will therefore be able to help you convince her. I am certain that you will manage to approach him.

Moreover, as I said, there is truly a public dimension here. Even if a particular woman says that, as far as she is concerned, it does not matter how she covers her head, as long as it is properly covered in any case, it is clear that she cannot give the same assurance regarding others (note: a kerchief can be removed more easily than a wig). This is self-evident. If this matter is settled, for the true good of both parties and their families, this proposal (note: to marry this young girl) will indeed be judicious. It will take place at a good and fruitful time.

Someone might object that the Mothers of Israel (note: Sarah, Rivka, Rachel, and Leah) did not wear a sheitel, but an answer to this question has already been given. Indeed, Chassidus* explains in the Likkutei Torah*, on Parshas Bechukosai, that the opposite of a blessing, when stated in the Torah, is in reality a blessing. And in this case, it is indeed one of the blessings of the era of the heel of Moshiach* (note: in the immediate proximity of his coming): "The daughter will rise against her mother" (Michah 7:6) — in order to strengthen her observance of the Torah and the mitzvos*. This is self-evident.

With my blessing for giving good news of all this, as well as of your state of health and your livelihood,

M. Schneerson,
