To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of manifold accomplishments, descended from an illustrious family,

Rav Avraham Shlomo Katz,

Greetings and blessings,

As a mark of respect, I acknowledge receipt in writing of the letter from the rabbinical court (beis din*) that you direct, having already done so previously by telephone. May the Master of peace, Who gave us His Torah in order to establish it in the world — in the words of the Rambam* at the end of the Laws of Chanukah — multiply peace within Israel. In this way, blessing, goodness, and benefit will be abundant, as our Sages say at the end of the Midrash Esther Rabbah.

Such is indeed the characteristic of a rabbinical court that fully assumes its mission, as stated in the Tana D'vei Eliyahu Rabbah, chapter 11, regarding the proper conduct and role of the Sanhedrin* in Israel. This point was discussed at the Chassidic gathering (farbrengen*) on the day of the giving of the Torah this year (note: see Likkutei Sichos, vol. 2, p. 316), in connection with the commentary on the following directive of the Mishnah: "Be among the disciples of Aharon. Love peace" (Avos 1:12).

Every Jew is required to adopt such conduct, especially one who is a descendant of Aharon (note: the addressee is a Kohen), to whom it was enjoined: "You shall raise the lights" (Bamidbar 8:2) — that is, all the categories that comprise the Jewish people, as the Alter Rebbe* explains at the end of his Likkutei Torah*, beginning of Parshas Behaalos'cha, which we have just read — "until the flame rises of its own accord."

With my respects, my blessing, and greetings to all the members of the rabbinical court, whom Hashem should grant long life,

P.S.: As our Sages say, one may presume that an emissary fulfills the mission entrusted to him. Accordingly, your son-in-law, the Rav, whom Hashem should grant long life, has surely conveyed to you the terms of the discussion we had regarding the publication of the continuation of your book, Orchos Mishpatim. Nothing stands in the way of the will, and the Torah of integrity should not be less widely circulated than all the useless words that are being published ever more broadly. Now, the attribute of good must be more powerful... (note: than that of misfortune).
