To the young man David (note: D. Dahan, of Ramat HaSharon),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your questions:

A) It is said: "One who sees a Sotah* woman in her degradation should abstain from wine" (Sotah 2a) (note: like the Nazir, because the wine was at the origin of her transgression), and "the Nazir* is considered to have committed a sin for having deprived himself of wine" (Taanis 11a). The apparent contradiction between these two teachings is explained by Tosafos, in Tractate Taanis 11a.

B) Our Sages say that "the most empty among you are filled with mitzvos* like a pomegranate" (Eruvin 19a). You object that if they are "empty," they cannot also be "filled." In fact, they are called "empty" only by comparison with other Jews (note: but not in absolute terms).

... בקושיתו: א) הסתירה דשני המאמרים, הרואה סוטה בקלקולה יזיר עצמו מן היין ושנזיר נקרא חוטא על שציער עצמו מן היין - מתורץ בתוד"ה אמר (תענית יא, א).

ב)במרז"ל ריקנים שבך מלאים מצות, דאם הוא ריק אינו מלא. - הכוונה ריק בערך ובהשוואה לשאר ישראל.
