To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shmuel Menachem Mendel (note: Rav S. M. M. Schneersohn, of Jerusalem; see letter no. 5343),

Greetings and blessings,

At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place (Ohel*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. It seems that these people are not being told that when their condition improves because their name was mentioned at the holy resting place, they must, of course, be inspired by this and, in particular, study the teachings and adopt the practices of the one who rests in that place. And if the one who received the blessing exerts influence on a group or community, he also has an absolute duty to spread these teachings and practices in his surroundings. This is self-evident. May Hashem grant that at least in the future, you devote yourself to this (note: giving these necessary explanations to the people concerned).

I would like to know in what manner you were given permission to write and mention the name of this person's son.

You tell me that in a Sefer Torah* whose good provenance is established, one can clearly observe that the Aleph has been changed to a Hei (note: in the word "Petsoua Daka"; see letters no. 4926 and 5502). It is obviously necessary to determine who made this change and when it was done. It is known that in the Holy Land, a few years ago, emissaries of a certain person proceeded in this manner and, presumably in various locations, did so discreetly. I myself only became aware of this in recent years. On this subject, consult the Mishnas Avraham, chapter 32, which enumerates what appeared in the Sefer Torah of men of great holiness — and not only among those belonging to Chabad. They too inscribed an Aleph. Also see my letter in the Otzar HaPoskim, at the end of volume 1.

You no doubt took advantage of the time of the giving of our Torah to spread the wellsprings (note: of Chassidus*). You will write me about all of this, with all the necessary details.

With my blessing for giving good news,

ה'תקא
