To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Tzvi HaCohen (note: see letter no. 4759),

Greetings and blessings,

You inform me that your son Yisroel Yitzchak is reaching his Bar Mitzvah*. May Hashem grant that, from the age of thirteen, he progress to that of fifteen, and so on, as defined by the Mishnah in Tractate Avos, chapter 5. He will increase his ardor and constancy in his study of the Torah, both its revealed dimension and Chassidus*. He will fulfill the mitzvos* in the best way possible. And Hashem will grant him the success of being a Chassid, one who fears Hashem and is learned. You and your wife will derive from him and from all your children much Chassidic nachas* (satisfaction).

I send you my blessing for giving good news, including regarding the development, to the fullest extent possible — both quantitative and qualitative — of your Chassidus classes (note: see letter no. 5330). Indeed, Divine Providence has granted you the merit of teaching it publicly. Now, nothing stands in the way of the will. And you will receive the Torah with joy, in a profound manner.

Moreover, it should be noted and emphasized that at the time of the giving of the Torah (note: see letter no. 2140), its hidden teaching was revealed in an open manner, since all received the vision of the Heavenly Chariot (Merkavah*). In contrast, its revealed teaching was transmitted in a hidden and allusive manner. And you know the saying and directive of our Sages: "Just as... so too..." (note: just as at the giving of the Torah, each person was seized with awe, fear, trembling, and perspiration, so too can this be the case today, during the time of study). Consult Torah Or*, page 22b.

The Alter Rebbe* says: "so as not to eliminate" (note: in his laws of Tefillin*, the Alter Rebbe says, regarding the interruption between the arm and head tefillin: "so as not to eliminate the possibility of responding to matters of holiness." The question posed by the addressee was: "Is this interruption a possibility or an obligation?") — and one must conclude from this that it is indeed an obligation.
