To the young man Moshe Hillel,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letters of 6 and 22 Iyar. I read with pleasure that you lead your class not only in study, but also in fear of Hashem and Chassidus*. And indeed, one depends on the other. For the Alter Rebbe* explains that love is the source of the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments, and fear is the source of the three hundred and sixty-five prohibitions. On this subject, you should carefully consult the beginning of chapter 4 of the Tanya*.

How much more so is this the case when one is in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days — a land "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always directed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" (Devarim 11:12). Every effort, every initiative in this direction is therefore justified, for such is the purpose of man, as it is said: "Fear Hashem and keep His commandments, for this is the whole purpose of man" (Koheles 12:13). And "whoever preserves a single Jewish soul is as if he had preserved the entire world" (Sanhedrin 37a).

Of course, to influence others, it is not enough to merely moisten oneself. One must, moreover, do so to the point of being able to moisten others. You will understand what this means.

במענה על מכתביו מששי וכ"ב באייר, נעם לי לקרות בו אשר מדריך הוא כתתו לא רק בעניני לימודם אלא גם בעניני יראת שמים ועניני חסידות אשר באמת הא בהא תליא, וכמ"ש רבנו הזקן שהאהבה היא שרש לכל רמ"ח מצות עשה והיראה היא שרש לשס"ה לא תעשה (עיין היטב תניא ריש פרק ד') ובפרט כשנמצאים בארצנו הקדושה תבנה ותכונן על ידי משיח צדקנו במהרה בימינו, אשר עיני ה' אלקיך בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה, ומזה מובן גם כן אשר כל השתדלות ויגיעה בזה כדאיות הן, כיון אשר זה כל האדם כמ"ש את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור כי זה כל האדם ואפילו המקיים רק נפש אחת מישראל הרי זה כאילו קיים עולם מלא.

ומובן גם כן אשר בכדי להשפיע על הזולת אין מספיק להיות טופח בלבד כי אם טופח על מנת להטפיח, והנמשל מובן.
